Peace activist Cathy Webster of Chico has learned she'll serve her 60-day sentence at a county jail in Elk Grove.

She was one of 16 people who walked onto federal property at Fort Benning in Columbus, Ga., during the annual protest against the Western Hemisphere Institute for Security Cooperation (formerly known as the School of the Americas). Thousands of people take part in the demonstration. In a telephone interview Thursday, Webster said she'll need to report to the jail March 21.
She said she was a little surprised to be assigned to a county jail rather than a federal prison. She was convicted of a federal offense. Apparently, the Rio Cosumnes, which serves Sacramento County, accepts some federal prisoners under a contract.

She said she got arrested to draw attention to the plight of people in Latin America who are being tortured and killed by their own governments. Webster said for many years the institute at Fort Benning has trained soldiers from a number of Latin American countries. Many of them have committed atrocities, torture, rape and murder against their own people, she said. Activists are trying to persuade Congress to cut off funding for the institute and shut it down.
