Cheney hints at Iran strike

By Greg Sheridan
February 24, 2007 01:20am

US Vice-President Dick Cheney has raised the possibility of military action to stop Iran acquiring nuclear weapons.
He has endorsed Republican senator John McCain's proposition that the only thing worse than a military confrontation with Iran would be a nuclear-armed Iran.

In an exclusive interview with The Weekend Australian, Mr Cheney said: "I would guess that John McCain and I are pretty close to agreement."
The visiting Vice-President said that he had no doubt Iran was striving to enrich uranium to the point where they could make nuclear weapons.
He accused Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad of espousing an "apocalyptic philosophy" and making "threatening noises about Israel and the US and others".
He also said Iran was a sponsor of terrorism, especially through Hezbollah. However, the US did not believe Iran possessed any nuclear weapons as yet.
"You get various estimates of where the point of no return is," Mr Cheney said, identifying nuclear terrorism as the greatest threat to the world.

.....

Mr Cheney saw Mr Rudd yesterday afternoon and will spend today with John Howard. He will fly home tomorrow.

1. No one but Cheney & the neos have a stake in 'getting the right
outcome in Iraq'. The rest of us will be well served when we are the hell and gone out of there.

8. Short answer: No
And I sincerely wish the Democratic leadership would get wise to that fact and start acting as if the delusional paranoids in the White House really existed. Because they do, and they are not going to be impressed with "non-binding resolutions" of tut, tut and tsk, tsk.

Well over 60% of the country is clamoring for a halt to this madness, but Democrats in Congress seem to hear only the courtiers inside the Beltway who are more interested in preserving their lofty status than in the good of the nation and indeed the larger world.

9. Make them back up this slogan with some factual basis
"the only thing worse than a military confrontation with Iran would be a nuclear-armed Iran."

IF, IF, and IF Iran were to join the club, the ever-expanding club that already has some scary members, how would this be worse than consigning the US to fighting another world war? Why, because Israel has said it's "unacceptable?" Why? It's acceptable for us to have Russian missiles aimed at us. I assume we've got Chinese missiles aimed at us. We've done duck and cover and dug our bombshelters and kissed our asses goodbye. The only thing we have protecting us is MAD, Mutually Assured Destruction, and the knowledge that if someone nukes us, we'll nuke em back and the whole thing is so insane, so unthinkable that no one will do it. I do not know why Iran should be considered so crazed as to make this theory obsolete, yet we sleep tight knowing Pakistan has the bomb.

I think nuclear war with Iran is still a longshot. But the disaster the neocons are marching the US to is real and immediate.

11. If espousing an "apocalyptic philosophy" is grounds for invasion
Edited on Fri Feb-23-07 07:03 PM by daleo
Any country being governed by a professed Christian would be open to invasion. Same goes for "making threatening noises". Almost every country in the world makes the odd "threatening noise".

I mean while congress REALLY tries to stop him.

I'm pretty sure congress still has to legally, "okay", a war.

And I'm pretty sure the bush junta will do it anyway with no okay, proving this is an all out tyranny.

18. It's time for *all* humane politicians, both Democratic and Republican
to put THEIR COUNTRY (and the lives of the human race in general) above their political ambitions.

Barry McGuire's tune was published forty years too early.

But now, my friends we are on The Eve of Destruction

Don’t you understand what I’m tryin’ to say
Can’t you feel the fears I’m feelin’ today?
If the button is pushed, there’s no runnin’ away
There’ll be no one to save, with the world in a grave

And you tell me
Over and over and over again, my friend
Ah, you don’t believe
We’re on the eve
of destruction.

Yeah, my blood’s so mad feels like coagulatin’
I’m sitting here just contemplatin’
I can’t twist the truth, it knows no regulation.
Handful of senators don’t pass legislation
And marches alone can’t bring integration
When human respect is disintegratin’
This whole crazy world is just too frustratin’

And you tell me
Over and over and over again, my friend
Ah, you don’t believe
We’re on the eve
of destruction.

Think of all the hate there is in Red China
Then take a look around to Selma, Alabama
You may leave here for 4 days in space
But when you return, it’s the same old place
The poundin’ of the drums, the pride and disgrace
You can bury your dead, but don’t leave a trace
Hate your next-door neighbor, but don’t forget to say grace
And… tell me over and over and over and over again, my friend
You don’t believe
We’re on the eve
Of destruction
Mm, no no, you don’t believe
We’re on the eve
of destruction.

20. Get ready babies,
cause here it comes. And I promise no one will do a damned thing to stop it. The only thing that might slow it down is military conscription. Draft those white middle class boys and see how long it lasts.

23. Military Conscription Would Enable It
They don't have enough troops to invade Iran, or even to contain Iran's response to an air and sea attack.

The draft is obviously part of their Iran war plans. How could it not be?
They are trying to trick the Democrats into passing it so we get the blame when those kids start coming home wounded, pstd'ed, or in boxes.

26. Cheney: 'All options' available for Iran - Sat press conf with Howard
SYDNEY, Australia - Vice President Dick Cheney on Saturday renewed Washington's warning to Iran that "all options" are on the table if the country continues to defy U.N.-led efforts to end Tehran's nuclear ambitions.

~snip~

Cheney said the United States was "deeply concerned" about Iran's activities, including the "aggressive" sponsoring of terrorist group Hezbollah and inflammatory statements by President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

He said top U.S. officials would meet soon with European allies to decide the next step toward planned tough sanctions against Iran if it continues enriching uranium.

"We worked with the European community and the United Nations to put together a set of policies to persuade the Iranians to give up their aspirations and resolve the matter peacefully, and that is still our preference," Cheney said.

"But I've also made the point, and the president has made the point, that all options are on the table," he said, leaving open the possibility of military action.
