Anti-war protesters in huge demo (UK)

Tens of thousands of anti-war protesters are to join huge demonstrations in London and Glasgow, with organisers claiming that moves to start bringing British troops home from Iraq have only strengthened their cause.

Politicians, entertainers, military families and anti-war activists will be among speakers at the rallies in the cities.

The Stop The War Coalition said the London event would be one of the biggest anti-war protests in years, with people travelling from across the country to take part.

The demo, jointly organised with CND and the British Muslim Initiative, will also show opposition to replacing the Trident nuclear missile system and will warn against attacking Iran.

Lindsey German, of the Stop The War Coalition, said: "All the signs are that we are going to have a very big protest in London, with coaches coming from 150 towns and cities across the country."

1. Anti-war protests in two cities
Anti-war marchers will converge on London and Glasgow calling for the return of all troops from Iraq.

They are also demanding that plans to replace the Trident nuclear missile system are scrapped.

Organisers say Prime Minister Tony Blair's decision to bring 1,600 troops home has only strengthened their cause.

Politicians, entertainers and military families will be among the speakers in London's Trafalgar Square and George Square in Glasgow.

Roaming force of 1,000 extra troops to join mission against Taliban

· Broader remit may expose soldiers to greater risk
· Increase follows failure to get other countries' help

Patrick Wintour, political editor
Saturday February 24, 2007

"The defence secretary, Des Browne, last night issued a statement confirming the deployment of extra troops. He said: "Following a cabinet discussion, the Ministry of Defence is now working on the final details of changes to our force levels ... I will announce our decisions in the proper way, to parliament on Monday."
