S.C. Sen. Jim DeMint: Surge gives U.S. a chance

Republican U.S. Sen. Jim DeMint of Greenville said Tuesday there is "a chance" for the success of President Bush's proposed troop surge in Iraq.

"I hope we can turn it around," he said.

DeMint told reporters and editors of The Greenville News that it is "reasonable" to give the 21,500-troop increase a 50-50 chance of success, one that might be higher if U.S. commanders in Iraq are correct in their assessments of a more aggressive stance by the Iraqi military and police.

"We've got a chance of succeeding," DeMint said.

DeMint said the U.S.-backed Iraqi government "has that signal, they know their time is limited, but the fact is that the political leadership cannot rule a country that's out of control."

Those who call for a political solution overseen by the Baghdad government "are in la-la land as far as I'm concerned," he said.

"What we've got to do is stand up to Baghdad, get the oil revenue problem resolved, the money starts flowing, then you get a little bit of national pride, a little bit of greed, and those things could work together to make this thing work."

Isn't it odd, though, that Mr. DeMint, surely a good, Christian man, is counting on the two of the Seven Deadly Sins (Pride and Greed) to pull his and his party's fannies out of the fire. Sloth, gluttony and the rest weren't working so well, I guess.

Off topic, but hilarious:
DeMint lives in a gated community in SC which until a few years ago was a wooded area. After the the houses were built and the gates were erected, it was discovered that there were also thousands of copperhead snakes already there. Horrors! I guess gates can keep out "those people", but don't work so well against venomous reptiles.
