Bush Advised To Issue Veto If D.C. Vote Bill Passes
Source: WaPo

The White House stepped up its opposition yesterday to legislation that would give the District a full seat in the House of Representatives, saying that if it reaches President Bush, his top advisers "would recommend that he veto the bill."

The statement came as the House Republican leadership began a vigorous campaign to persuade party members to vote against the bill when it reaches the House floor Friday.

The D.C. vote measure easily cleared two House committees last week, with strong Democratic support and votes from several Republicans. Democrats have pledged to use their 32-seat House majority to pass it. Friday will mark the first time the full House has considered granting the District a full seat in Congress since 1993, when a statehood measure was defeated.

The Punchline.....

"A Bush spokesman said last week that the White House opposed the bill on constitutional grounds."

8. Can Washington City Secede
(from the District of Columbia) and be annexed by Maryland? Then only the federal buildings and maybe the parks and other areas where no one lives would be the District.

I think annexation is a better solution than full statehood and more fair than getting one seat in Congress.

9. This will probably be the only time I ever agree with Bush but I think he's in the right here.
Article 1, Section 2 of the Constitution says "the House of Representatives shall be composed of members chosen every second year by the people of the several states" It goes on to say that a representative must be "be an inhabitant of that state in which he shall be chosen."

I just don't see how you can get around the specific constitutional language which gives representation only to states. I support D.C. statehood 100% and I wish Congress was spending their time on that instead of this odd bill. Given the framework of the Constitution, representation in the House but not the Senate seems absurd to me. The people of D.C. should be electing members to BOTH houses of Congress, not just one. Get on with making D.C. a state already instead of messing around with unreasonable bills which are unconstitutional on their face.

DC residents should be exempt from all federal taxes until the Constitution is amended to give them representation. Or until the District is granted statehood.

12. ironic, ain't it?
this is the administration that just fought to overturn the gun ban in DC, because citizens need guns to protect themselves against the government, and now they want to keep taking rights from the people of DC.

one of these things doesn't go with the other...one of these things is not like the rest.
