Edwards, Wife to Speak to Press Thursday
Source: WRAL.com

Presidential candidate John Edwards and his wife Elizabeth have scheduled a press conference Thursday at noon in Chapel Hill.

The campaign would not say what they would discuss, but observers have been awaiting an update on Elizabeth Edwards' latest breast cancer checkup.

According to a statement released Tuesday afternoon, she was expected to have a "follow-up medical appointment" Wednesday to a routine test she had on Monday.

"She's had similar follow-ups in the past, and they've all resulted in a clean bill of health, but Sen. Edwards has gone with her to these appointments, and he wanted to be with her tomorrow, too,” the statement said.

22. I agree
It sounds as if it has either reappeared or even metastasized to her lymph nodes or other organs, which is the worst possible news. It means she isn't going to beat it and live to be 90, but as you say, I really hope I am wrong.

I'm hoping that this is nothing more than an official "she's okay" so that any rumors, etc., won't dog his campaign. But I'm worried too.

17. Small possible suggestion of hope in this sentence...
Edwards had cut short a trip to Iowa Tuesday night to be with his wife Wednesday but still attended a barbecue fundraiser later in the evening in their hometown of Chapel Hill, N.C.

I read "later in the evening" to mean Wednesday evening.

John would not have left Elizabeth alone Wednesday night if the medical test result were grim.

From that I have hope.

Very possibly this is a clean bill of health announcement for the simple reason that John Edwards is now in the thick of his run for President. I hope so - John is my pick for Prez and Elizabeth is such a wonderful, amazing woman. It shall be good news!

30. From CNN...
"CHAPEL HILL, North Carolina (CNN) -- Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards and his wife, Elizabeth, have scheduled a news conference for Thursday to discuss what sources close to Edwards described as possible developments with her health.

The sources would not disclose the exact nature of Thursday's announcement, but they did say that the couple is not going before the press to say that "everything is OK."

Please, please, please, be well Elizabeth.

Of course, the most important thing is the health of Elizabeth Edwards, but I'm also afraid about what this means for the country in 2008.

43. Not that I heard of, though I doubt this is a good thread to discuss it.
The only things that have been "scandals," and many people think they are non-issues, is his large house and something about him not doing any pro-bono work as a lawyer. If you use the DU search function you can find out more. Both issues have been debated a ton here.

35. Edwards Plans Announcement With His Wife
Edited on Thu Mar-22-07 06:48 AM by sellitman
Source: The New York Times

A leading contributor to the campaign, speaking on condition of anonymity, said organizers had not been notified to cancel a long string of events scheduled before the end of March, the deadline for the first-quarter financial reports.

Mrs. Edwards has been one of her husband’s closest confidantes in both of his presidential campaigns. A former bankruptcy lawyer, who often spends hours a day on the Internet, she is among the campaign’s chief advisers.

37. It doesn't say anything about cancelled events

It says organizers have NOT been notified to cancel events.
The suggestion by a close friend that the campaign may be
affected by the subject of the press conference is a bit
worrying. A new poll just came out showing that Edwards
is leading in Iowa and in New Hampshire.

45. I hope that
Elizabeth's cancer hasn't returned, but if it has, it's unlikely that it could be kept a secret for long. Maybe Elizabeth has persuaded John to continue his quest for the White House, and that's why they're holding a press conference - to let the American people know that she is encouraging John to stay in the race. Better for Elizabeth to publically show her support for his candidacy in spite of her illness than to let rumors fly later, painting John as selfish and hard-hearted.

46. Rumor is he's suspending campaign
Edwards to Suspend Campaign

John Edwards is suspending his campaign for President, and may drop out completely, because his wife has suffered a recurrence of the cancer that sickened her in 2004, when she was diagnosed with breast cancer, an Edwards friend told The Politico.

"At a minimum he's going to suspend" the campaign, the source said. "Nobody knows precisely how serious her recurrence is. It’ll be another couple of days before there’s complete clarity."

"For him right now he has one priority which is her health and the security of the two young children," said the friend.

As for the campaign, "You don't shut this machine off completely, but everything will go on hold."

http://www.politico.com/blogs/bensmith/0307/Edwards_to_Suspend_Campaign.html

I really feel for the family, especially for Elizabeth and the kids, especially Jack and Emma, how scary for kids that young to have your mom ill. However you feel about John Edwards politically, he is one great husband and father. And Elizabeth is such a genuine person, I really love her! This family has had too much hardship!

50. While I admire John and Elizabeth's decision to continue the campaign,
Edited on Thu Mar-22-07 02:26 PM by MilesColtrane
I just don't see how, at some point, he will not be forced to drop out.

The only way they will be able to be together during her treatment, is if she travels with him, or he mounts a very limited campaign.

A presidential campaign is a grueling affair that can wear down even the healthiest person and their SO. You get very little rest.
I think their initial decision is an optomistic one, but maybe not a realistic one.

Godspeed to the Edwards family.
