Condit Sues Over Chandra Levy Articles
Edited on Fri Dec-19-03 11:36 PM by kskiska
WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (AP) - Former Rep. Gary Condit sued The National Enquirer and other tabloids for $209 million on Friday, alleging they falsely connected him with the 2001 murder of federal intern Chandra Levy.

(snip)

AMI General Counsel Michael Kahane said in a statement that the Boca Raton-based company ``will vigorously defend any suit filed by Mr. Condit'' and that he expects it to be dismissed.

(snip)

Condit's lawsuit details 45 pages of headlines he alleges were false and defamatory, such as ``Congressman & the intern. Chandra killed in kinky sex game!''

The lawsuit claims the tabloids failed to reasonably investigate the stories and paid sources for the false statements ``in a calculated effort'' to boost profits.

Wonder if he'll sue the Levys for defamation of character.

1. Don't go there Condit...
If any one person (aside from GWB) actually benefitted from 9/11, it was Gary Condit. Overnight, the world forgot all about Chandra Levy... did they ever find her?

So, Condit, seemingly off the hook for it, is now pressing his luck by suing the press? Maybe this will inflame the whole story again and it'll put the pressure back on the police to find out what happened.

On a similar note, a medium-sized company here in my town got into hot water because one of their lead engineers had been called for jury duty in a murder case (it would cost the company a substantial sum to lose this key man potentially for weeks during a large project). Allegedly, several people in the company suggested ways that he could get himself recused from the jury pool. (Including mentioning that the victim had been a friend of a co-worker's daughter.) The whole bit was stinking up the local paper for a couple weeks and one of the first actual court dates fell on 9/12. The judge took one look at it and essentially said, "after what happened yesterday, I can't see the point of pursuing a penny-ante thing like this" and threw the case out. Several company honchos managed to dodge almost guaranteed contempt of court/jury tampering charges due to that -- I'd like to think they learned their lesson, too. They would have to be stone morons to revisit that and try to sue somebody or complain about damage to their reputations after being given a pass to walk away from the whole mess.

That's what Condit seems to be doing here--maybe he misses the notoriety. Oh, and let me guess -- for the last three years, he's been working with O.J. in pursuit of the "real" killers.

2. Perhaps I missed something.....
but I thought people were innocent until proven guilty. BTW, no charges have been filed against him. And furthermore, he needs to sue that rag for every penny he can get. The media did a number on him, for having an affair, just like they did Bill Clinton.

3. Why are you implying...
...Condit is guilty of anything? If no prosecutor has found viable charges to bring against him, how can you?

The whole Condit "scandal" did was it was meant to do: His career is over.

6. Are you kidding???
If you'd followed the atrocious coverage of Fox, you'd know that the evidence against Condit is threadbare at best. And yes, they did find her body.

The smear campaign against him was vicious because he was a Democrat and he sat on a congressional intelligence committee. They wanted him out.

If he was as guilty as you seem to be implying, why hasn't FOX pursued the matter? Or are messrs. Hannity, O'Reilly etc getting forgetful in their old age??

I hope they all pay out billions in damages. As much as he courts allow- and I'm usually not a big proponent of defamation laws.
