Pakistan warns U.S. against critical legislation
By Simon Cameron-Moore

ISLAMABAD, April 11 (Reuters) - Pakistani Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz warned the United States on Wednesday against any legislation that makes military aid conditional on its results in fighting terrorism and introducing democratic reforms.

Aziz's comments came after leading U.S. Democrats submitted a non-binding resolution to the Senate calling for such steps.

The resolution, submitted by Senators Chris Dodd, John Kerry and Joseph Biden, was reported by the Web edition of the News, Pakistan's biggest-selling English-language daily, on Wednesday.

"Given the sacrifices Pakistan has made in the war on terrorism any legislation critical of Pakistan would involve a negative public reaction that would prove to be counter-productive," Aziz said in remarks to a military symposium organised in Islamabad by the Pakistani and U.S. militaries.

1. Oh hell, just give them the money. Why expect anything in return? That
would make too much sense.

2. Yep, that's working real well
in the war on drugs. We might as well apply it to the war on terror.

Hey, now I'm against TWO wars!

3. i think what he is saying is
that we already got (i mean * already got) what pakistan had to offer, their support during *'s madness, now we have to pay what we agreed to without any additional strings attached. (Bush wrote checks that the US public now has to cash.)

4. Don't look now but we didn't get shit from Musharraf or Pakistan
except Dr. Kahn and his Nuclear Weapons Wholesale Outlet and total obstruction when it comes to dealing with al Quaeda inside their borders. Admittedly Musharraf is in somewhat of a bad position but I'm funny in that I believe if you pay somebody for something, you should get it.

7. Its the "Bite the hand that feeds you" aid program
If they pushed any further, they would be toppled by the people we are supposedly at war with.
I mean, how much of our foreign aid is used as protection money to keep the Paki ISI running the show as puppet master?

8. Our two worst enemies:
1) Saudi Arabia

2) Pakistan

And not necessarily in that order.

10. What's the deal with these damn "non binding resolutions"?
Edited on Wed Apr-11-07 06:29 PM by fujiyama
But regardless it's nice to see someone doing ANYTHING about this. Seriously though, this administration has been pouring BILLIONS into Pakistan (almost entirely in military aid) and we are seeing few results.

Of course, this administration doesn't want to do anything meaningful in fighting terrorism - indicated primarily by their handling of Pakistan with kiddie gloves.
