CHICAGO (Associated Press) -- A principal and a teacher at a suburban elementary school quit amid allegations they were caught on video having sex in the principal's office, authorities say.

In keeping with Cook County's reputation for bare-knuckle politics, the scandal broke after copies of the sex tape were mailed anonymously to parents this week, just days before a contested school board election.

The Sandridge Elementary School in Lynwood, Ill., is seen on Friday, April 13, 2007. A principal and a teacher at the suburban elementary school quit amid allegations they were caught on video having sex in the principal's office, authorities say. The case has also created something of a mystery: Who planted the camera that recorded the action?

Leroy Coleman and Janet Lofton submitted their resignations after meeting with the district superintendent Thursday, said John Izzo, board attorney for the Sandridge Elementary School district, about 20 miles south of Chicago.

4. sex in the principals office at an elementary school?
What could be wrong with that? Kids could walk in. They should be working. I am sure there are other things wrong.

17. Let me count the ways...
1) The potentially huge sexual harassment case to which this principal has exposed his school district. One report on this story I read said that he had illicit liasons with two teachers that were caught on those tapes, both of whom would be his subordinates in the power structure of the school's employement roles. All it takes is for one other teacher to claim there was a hostile environment created by preferential treatment of the two women the principal was having affairs with and boom! Millions upon millions of tax payer money going towards lawsuits (but mostly to the lawyers of course) for this principal's irresponsible behavior.

2) I'd be very surprised if this conduct ("romantic" interaction between school officials, esp. where one is subordinate to the other) wasn't expressly forbidden by their employment contracts via a sexual harassment policy. Likely, their conduct violates the conditions of their employment. I'd be willing to bet the cameras were set up by either school board officials who had been alerted to the suspected activities (my first guess) or by a spouse of one of the involved parties via a private investigator looking for proof of infidelity.

3) Wrongful use of workplace resources. If you're gonna have a sleazy affair, at least have the decorum to not do so in an elementary school office, in your workplace... I can just see horny principal guy forgetting he has a parent meeting after school hours and getting caught in the act by a parent with kids in tow. The time clocks on some of the video still frames read the activities as happening around 5-6 pm. Umm, my kid's school has an after-school care program and there are still a lot of kids on school grounds at those times. I'd be shocked if this school din't have the same...

Those are pretty much the biggest reasons it's a huge problem for this school. And yeah, if any of them are married, it's going to get even uglier.

3. Stupid and wrong of the principal and teacher........
to have sex in his office, but someone planting a camera and secretly taping them is really rotten. Sending the tape to parents of the students hardly seemed necessary, the school could have taken action without someone doing that. Seems like the principal had some real enemies.

7. While this incident isn't "kosher" on first impression, isn't there an assumption
of a protection of privacy? It happened in the principal's office, with the door closed, not in a public room such as, say, the teachers' lunchroom.

I have more trouble with the hidden camera and publication of the film than I do with the tryst between the principal and the teacher.

23. Yeah, but "2 wrongs" and all of that.
I still agree with you, though -- the invasion of privacy is worse than the inappropriate (even if consensual) sex.

Some brutal school board politics in that town, though, huh?

28. Who "owned" that office and did they really have an
expectation of privacy in a public building? Had they taken it to a hotel or a private residence ok, but not a PUBLIC BUILDING. Maybe there should be cameras in all public building all the time, then there would be no question about privacy and bureaucrats might spend more time doing their jobs and less time screwing off.........pun intended.

That makes all the difference to me. If it wasn't and they were consenting adults I don't see the problem. I also wonder if they were married and one of the spouses planted the camera, or had it planted. In which case those who play must pay, and all that.

24. Teachers should be held to a higher standard
Edited on Sat Apr-14-07 11:49 PM by Nevernose
Teachers should be held to a higher standard, the same as officers in the military are supposed to hold themselves to a higher standard.

And I say this as a teacher. The office I work in is not a place for that. I'm not naive; I know it goes on. It still ain't right.

We're supposed to be leaders. I really do believe that we, as educators, must be the ones who set an example and take the moral high ground. I'm not saying that teachers shouldn't drink or smoke or cuss -- God knows I do  -- or be anywhere close to perfect, only saying that behavior doesn't belong at school, whether or not kids are present on campus.

And while you're at school, keep it in your pants. It's not some accountant's office or real estate firm. It's NOT a normal job, and the responsibility that other people place in us with their children should not be taken lightly.

More pragmatically:

Teaching is, in all probability, the most shat upon profession in America. Fair or not, I think if we want to be taken seriously as professionals, then, when at our workplace, whether or not people are watching, we've got to ACT like professionals. Shit like this brings us all down.

Thirdly: sexual harassment potential. Other posters have gone into the liability issue.

Finally: it's tacky. I really don't want to go to go to a meeting on Monday suspecting that my boss has been screwing a coworker on the table on which I've set my coffee and donut.

(just kidding)

thought i heard on the radio yesterday that there were three people "involved" in the office

also thought the radio said that someone (? officials?) were going after the person who distributed the copies of the film

(that's right, msm, go after the leak, danrather the leaker instead of paying attention to the central story)

35. this is flat-out ugly
Somewhere out there Kenneth Starr is smiling...I hope Mr. or Mrs. HighHorse who planted the camera and mailed copies out to parents at least has the guts to come forward...(and i certainly hope THAT person has a squeaky clean private life...)

I'm not excusing what happened, as it was in poor taste (but honestly, consenting adults are gonna do what they do behind closed doors, and i know sex in the workplace gives some people an extra boost), but whoever taped it acted just as, if not more than disgracefully as that couple
