Outspoken editor of weekly newspaper shot to death

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) - The outspoken new editor of the Oakland Post was shot to death Thursday near a downtown courthouse in what police believe was a deliberate hit.

Chauncey Bailey, who had been a reporter for The Oakland Tribune before moving to the Post in June, was killed around 7:30 a.m., Oakland Police spokesman Roland Holmgren said. He said witnesses told police that a single gunman had shot Bailey and then fled.

Police had no motive for the killing but said it did not appear to be random. Holmgren said investigators would look into any possible connections with Bailey's work.

"I've spoken with him several times," Holmgren said. "I know him as being a somewhat outspoken type individual, assertive in his journalistic approach when trying to get at matters at hand."

Black Legislators: Drug War Has Failed
News Report, Chauncey Bailey,
The Sun Reporter, Jan 01, 2005

Eyeing the failure of California voters to repeal Three Strikes laws, the National Black Caucus of State Legislators has approved a resolution condemning the "war on drugs" and calling for "alternatives to failed polices."

Among their suggestions: work to repeal mandatory minimum sentences, and divert non-violent drug offenders into treatment programs. "The National Black Caucus of State Legislators made history last weekend by passing a resolution that both condemns the war on drugs and commits the lawmakers to developing alternatives," said a statement to the media. "The resolution was sponsored by Delegate Salima Marriott of Maryland. Specifically, it singles out issues like reform of mandatory minimum sentences and diversion of nonviolent drug offenders into treatment."

The resolution states, in part, "The war on drugs has failed and while states have continually increased their expenditures to wage the war on drugs, policies which rely heavily on arrest and incarceration have proved costly and ineffective at addressing these issues."

The move was echoed by others. "The war on drugs is failing everybody, but no one is being devastated by it like African Americans," said Michael Blain, director of public policy at the Drug Policy Alliance. "That's why it's so historic that the people who represent the communities who
have the most to gain from reform are taking the lead in addressing this problem, and finding solutions."

Critics of the war on drugs point out the extreme racial disparities in application of drug laws. According to Human Rights Watch, while Blacks and whites have similar rates of drug use, Blacks go to jail at 13 times the rate of whites. Although African Americans comprise only
12.2 percent of the population, they make up 38 percent of those arrested for drug offenses and 59 percent of those convicted of drug offenses.

You say the murders will not be painted as unfortunate inner city violence ? What kind of dots are you suggesting will be connected ?

Homeless Activist Following MLK’s Lead
By: Chauncey Bailey
(Published in the Oakland Tribune on August 22, 2003)
“Poverty is a violation of Economic Human Rights”
Oakland – Fourteen community activists from the Bay Area are planning to join thousands of
others from across the country on Saturday in the nation’s capital for the 40th anniversary of the
historic march led by the Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr.
In 1963, the civil rights leader delivered his “I Have A Dream” speech before tens of thousands.
In 2003, the issue, according to activists, has shifted from civil rights to economic rights – the
right to have a job, decent housing, schools, and health care. Seven of the activists are from
Oakland, the others are from San Jose.
On Thursday, supporters held a press conference at St. Mary’s Center in Oakland, a social
services agency for the homeless. They said they are getting support from laid-off teachers,
health care workers and families who lack health care insurance, and government employees hit
by budget cuts.
The California delegation to Dr. King’s Poor Peoples March is being supported by the center, the
Oakland –based Women's Economic Agenda Project, and the Community Homeless Alliance
Ministry of San Jose, according to organizers. They plan to join others Saturday and set up a socalled
Resurrection City made up of a “non-violent, multiracial army of the poor.”
Organizers said after Dr. King organized lunch counter sit-ins to bring civil rights to blacks, he
realized those protests meant little if people could not afford to eat. “Poverty is a violation of
economic human rights, “ aid Carolyn Milligan, an executive with the Women's Economic
Agenda Project. “With all the budget cuts and unemployment there are more people suffering,”
said the Rev Scott Wagers of the First Christian Church, San Jose. “There are people in my
church who used to make $70,000 a year but now are homeless,” he said.
Jose Querdo, 61, of Oakland will not go to the rally Saturday but he supports its goals. “I was
homeless for six months in 2001,” he said. “The issue today for people is not begging for food on
the street but getting housing,” He went to St. Mary’s Center for Housing and other assistance
and is now enrolled at Merritt College.
“I support the National Affordable Housing Trust Fund Act that was reintroduced this year by
(Congresswoman) Barbara Lee (D-Oakland),” he said. The law calls for more housing for lowincome
households.

Used to live in Oakland last year. There are a lot of shootings there. Just for looking at someone the wrong way. I had strangers come to my apartment and want to hurt me because I was once friends with someone they didn't like. These antagonists didn't even know me and their qualms with my former friend were very minor.

The only suspicious characteristic with the shooting in question (above topic post) was that it happened to a reporter.

Last year I watched THREE shooting victims be helped into Oakland's Highland Hospital while waiting for my own doc. All on the same evening.

According to a beloved grandmother I was friends with: "It's the Wild West out here".

I gave her a bid on a bullet proof garage door once...

SHOCK IN OAKLAND: Newspaper Reporter Executed in Broad Daylight by Masked Gunman
Aug 2nd, 2007 by Chris

OAKLAND, Calif. — Police are at the scene of a fatal shooting in Oakland that was reported at about 7:30 a.m. Thursday, NBC11 reported.

Sources told NBC11 the victim was Oakland Post reporter Chauncey Bailey.

The victim was shot once in the back and once in the head, Oakland Fire Department Capt. Melinda Drayton said.

The shooting was reported at 14th Street and Alice Street, Wilson said.

Bailey was pronounced dead at the scene.

NBC11’s Christie Smith wrote in her Reporter’s Notebook entry: “I asked a lot of questions because when the police chief and deputy chief show up at a crime scene you can bet something startling has happened. An Oakland Police Officer did not tell me exactly what but said I would ‘unfortunately know the victim.’”

An NBC11 crew at the scene said the victim was apparently targeted, according to police.
(snip)

Co-workers told NBC11 Bailey was on his way to work when he was shot. He was supposed to arrive at work at 9 a.m. Thursday morning.

55. Oakland is not owrse than any other urban town
It's small so bad things that happen its relatively small bad neighborhoods get amplified. But I'd rather be here than in myriad other places around the LA basin, which are within spitting distance of whole regions the size of the entire City of Oakland and Berkeley combined where you would not want to walk at night. I think Oaktown is one of the most beautiful livable city's in CA. The real estate prices do the talking.

13. Anyone here reminded of Gary Webb?
Wikipedia link

Gary Webb (August 31, 1955 – December 10, 2004) was a Pulitzer Prize-winning American investigative journalist, best known for his 1996 "Dark Alliance" investigative report series, written for the San Jose Mercury News. In the three-part series (later published as a book), Webb investigated Nicaraguans linked to the CIA-backed Contras who had allegedly distributed crack cocaine into Los Angeles and funneled profits to the Contras. Webb also alleged that this influx of Nicaraguan supplied cocaine sparked and significantly fueled the widespread crack epidemic that swept through urban areas. Webb's reporting generated a large controversy and the Mercury News backed away from the story, effectively ending Webb's career as a mainstream media journalist.

On December 10, 2004, he died from two gunshot wounds to the head, said in media reports to be self-inflicted.

Interviews with friends stated that he was paranoid of people outside his house shortly before his death. This Pulitzer Prize winning Journalist reportedly killed himself because he "couldn't find work."

Something about his name rang a bell, and I wondered why so I just googled it.

First, he wasn't a hardcore Democrat - he voted for Fong over Boxer, because he thinks the Senate is too white and he has a point.

Anyway, my google search also turned up one of the dumbest FR posts ever...

Odd choice of weapons, a 12g. shotgun. I wonder if the victim has written anything about Islam lately.

Good god, do they see the 'evil-doers' under every rock? Bizarre and delusional.

On edit: another FR nut chimes in:

After a brief search,
it looks like the reporter
was a leftist nut.

Nobody attacks
their own like the leftists do.
The murder might

be some self-righteous
do-gooder who thought Chauncey
was getting too soft...

Gee, he even wrote his weirdness in poetic form.

Another offers his 'expert' opinion on Oakland...

None of the so-called reporting on this I've read so far makes clear that the Oakland Post is an activist weekly catering to a Black readership. That's probably not a big deal in the great scheme of things except this is Oakland, home of the Black Panthers, Hell's Angels, some of the worst Black slums in America and Black politics cast in the radical Marxist mode.
Ron Dellums and Barbara Lee are political products of this area and I expect all hell is going to break loose over this. Remember, Jerry Brown, former Oakland Mayor and well known for his radical Left views, is now California's Attorney General. Fasten your seat belts!

You really have to be mentally and intellectually deficient to post there.

If there's a story, hope a survivor(s) will step forward when possible, to share it.

68. Don't worry, they whitewashed the story and have their scapegoat
A 19-year-old handyman at Your Black Muslim Bakery admitted to police Friday night that he ambushed and killed Oakland Post editor Chauncey Bailey, investigators said.
Police said Devaughndre Broussard told them he killed Bailey because he was angry over stories the journalist had written about the bakery, its employees and leaders in the past. Investigators said Broussard also was concerned about stories that he thought Bailey might be working on.

snip

Broussard is currently on probation for a San Francisco robbery.

He is scheduled to be booked on suspicion of murder today.

31. With all the sleazy developers
who currently have a hard-on for historically black, blighted Oakland neighborhoods, the ready supply of local thugs who will cap anyone for a few bucks, and the traditional role of the black journalist as community leader against gentrification, it just feels right. I think the same thing about the still-unsolved murder of Jam Master Jay.

42. Thanks for the info.
You're probably right, soften up the neighborhoods for imminent domain seizures.

43. Or it could be related to the ongoing investigation related to Yusef Bey's business dealings.

As a community reporter Bailey may have known something damaging.

46. That's another interesting angle
I'm not sure murder is on the Bey playlist, though. It certainly is on many California developers' playlists!

47. I don't know either, but Bey's son was murdered on the street
about 3 or few years ago and there's a widening range of violent activity being linked to the family's dealings. The timing of the raid is interesting to say the least.

Of course, there's also the possibility that Bailey was killed by someone with a personal grudge.

don't point to a personal grudge. But it could be.

Newspaper Editor Shot On Sidewalk
Authorities tell AMW that a prominent Bay Area journalist, Chauncey Bailey, was the target of a deadly attack on a sidewalk in downtown Oakland at just after 7:20 am on August 2, 2007. Bailey, a renowned former reporter with the Oakland Tribune, had just started a new position as editor of the Oakland Post in June 2007.

Cops say that Bailey was approached by an unknown gunman in the 1400 block of Alice Street. The assailant, who was wearing dark colored, military style garb, shot Bailey once in the back and again in the head. Police say the weapon used may have been a shotgun or high powered rifle. Authorities also believe that the attack on Bailey was deliberate.

Looks as if the right-wing scum are whole-heartedly behind this Oakland killing, since they view the whole place as "leftist," and, in their overwhelming intelligence imagine this country should allow no one whatsoever to live on here who doesn't wholeheartedly support the right-wing way of running a country right into the bowels of hell in order to control every breathing thing in it.

45. The first thing that occurred to me was the "war on drugs." The Bushites are
very dirty on this. We're finding horrendous corruption in Colombia, which the Bush Junta has larded with billions of our taxpayer dollars for the murderous, phony "war on drugs." The Uribe regime (Bush's pals) have been heavily involved with the rightwing paramilitary drug traffickers and murderers of union leaders, poor peasants and political leftists. And the Junta is larding Mexico with this money as well. Funny how drugs keep pouring into this country, despite decades of police state policy and trillions of dollars spent. Possibly this reporter got hold of info on this extremely corrupt policy and its major players. MANY reporters in Mexico have been assassinated for their "war on drugs" investigations.

Cops Raid Bakery Covered by Slain Editor

Friday August 3, 2007 7:16 PM

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) - Police conducted a series of raids
early Friday, including one on a bakery that was the subject
of coverage by a journalist slain in a brazen shooting a day
earlier.

Deputy Police Chief Howard Jordan said 19 people were
detained in the pre-dawn raids on Your Black Muslim Bakery
and three other locations.

He called the raids part of a yearlong investigation into
violent crimes including murder, robbery and kidnapping, but
would not say whether they were related to the shooting of
journalist Chauncey Bailey on Thursday near the Alameda
County courthouse in downtown Oakland.

Jordan did not identify the other locations that were raided.
A news conference was set for later in the day.

64. Interesting excerpt from your Guardian link
snip
More recently, police said Bey's son and other men had smashed liquor bottles in corner stores and berated the Muslim owners for selling alcohol to the black community

http://www.guardian.co.uk/uslatest/story/0,,-6825756,00.html

Funny the British ran that paragraph and on this side of the pond it was deleted.

I'm sure the real problem is that there are more liquor licenses in certain areas at a disproportional ratio than other areas.

ie, the poor neighborhoods suffer from all sorts of state regulated drug abuse.

58. Oakland, Fremont descend on Your Black Muslim Bakery
snip
longtime Oakland journalist Chauncey Bailey was reportedly researching an investigative piece into Your Black Muslim Bakery before he was shot and killed just yesterday morning.

It remains unclear whether that killing is connected to today's heavy police activity at the bakery.

65. It reveals a lot about the person who uses language like that.
There are so many of us who just don't use those expressions, as we don't think like that. Not part of our vocabulary. It's a state of mind.
