Sadr pledges to work with UN if it replaces US, Britain in Iraq
Source: AFP

Radical Iraqi cleric Moqtada al-Sadr has pledged to commit his forces and followers to help the United Nations were it to replace American and British troops in Iraq, in an interview published on Monday.

Speaking to The Independent newspaper from his movement's headquarters in Kufa, south of the Iraqi capital Baghdad, Sadr said that he would "support the UN if it comes and replaces the American and British occupiers."

"If the UN comes here to truly help the Iraqi people, they will receive our help in their work. I would ask my followers to support the UN as long as it is here to help us rebuild our country.

"They must not just be another face of the American occupation."

2. True. But who can be trusted. The US? The UK? If he could put together
some kind of coalition to work with UN forces, then it should be done. I CANNOT go on as it is now.

P.S. He isn't the only murdering bastard in this mix. In fact, I doubt that he had killed anyone until our military started dropping bombs on a totally defenseless and innocent populace. So who would you trust more?

3. If he's to be trusted or if he can deliver, that's good news. The
problem is, he only controls his militia, and as another poster said, he can't be trusted.

This could also signal that Sadr believes the Shia have won, or are winning the civil war.

8. oh, he has been a man of his word, over and over and over....
When US forces put on the blue UN hats.......He'll break his word over and over and over again.

He has to look out for # 1 when deal get cut that don't favor his militia.

11. Even if his word was good, what about the scores of other militias
If I was an official in the UN, I wouldn't want to be put in that situation.

7. If we accept such a deal...
...what will have happened to our pledge to "never negotiate with terrorists?"

9. will he keep such a deal is the real question
he has a habit of running off to Qom for several months to consult with his 'elders' when the temp gets turned up a few notches.
This thread is worth reviewing a few months after the surge report is handed out for dissection

13. UN is a paper tiger
Of course Sadr supports them replacing the US. That way, he can take over the country without any real obstruction. The UN wouldn't do a thing.

14. The UN was there when we firts invaded
There was a car bombing that destroyed their headquarters and killed the UN mission chief in Baghdad. The UN quickly pulled out after that.

There's wuite a bit about it in Bremer's book.

15. Sadr knows that the UN...
....is just like him, a murdering sociopath. Trusting the UN on anything is sheer fantasy.

And I'm glad he made this statement. Of course it would fly in the face of imperialist plans.
