The Shia governor of Iraq's southern Muthana province has been killed by a roadside bomb, officials have said.
The governor, Mohammed Ali al-Hasani, was killed when the bomb exploded next to his convoy as it drove through the provincial capital, Samawa, police say.

Several bodyguards were also injured in the explosion, which happened at 0800 local time (0400 GMT).

Mr Hasani belonged to the largest Shia party in Iraq, the Supreme Islamic Iraqi Council (SIIC).

He is the second Shia governor killed this month.

Roadside bomb kills second Iraqi governor

Mon Aug 20, 2007 5:45am ET135

By Mariam Karouny

BAGHDAD (Reuters) - An Iraqi provincial governor was blown up by a roadside bomb on Monday in what appeared to be an escalation of a power struggle between rival Shi'ite factions that threatens to destabilize the country's oil-producing south.

Mohammed Ali al-Hassani, governor of Muthanna province, was on his way from the city of Rumaitha to Samawa, the provincial capital, when his convoy of nine cars was targeted by a powerful roadside bomb, provincial officials said.

One bodyguard was also killed and two others wounded.

He was the second provincial leader to be killed in two weeks. The governor of southern Diwaniya province, a fellow member of the powerful Shi'ite Supreme Iraqi Islamic Council (SIIC), was blown up by a roadside bomb on August 11.

Amazing how the escalation is working when folks keep dying. Fire goes out in one place and pops up someplace else. Iraq is just a giant game of whack-a-mole.

8. Why doesn't anyone talk about all the Iraqi governors who weren't killed today?
I'm pretty sure if we just give it another six months things will work out.

9. This is so insane
It's a battle BETWEEN rivaling Shiite factions - not even between Shiites and Sunnis.

Talk about a power vacuum.
