Castro as Hitler on Cuban front page sparks hunt for mystery satirist
Special correspondent
Tuesday December 30, 2003
The Guardian

The Cuban authorities have launched an inquiry into how the official newspaper of the Communist party ran a front page photograph of Fidel Castro which appeared to have been doctored to make him look like Adolf Hitler.

When the edition of Granma hit the streets this month party officials began to retrieve as many copies as they could, an operation which appears to have deterred foreign journalists based on the island from reporting the story.

The picture appeared above a story which reported President Fidel Castro's meeting with North American students. Close examination of the photograph shows that the image of the Cuban leader has been subtly altered to make him look like the Nazi leader.

2. It is pretty funny
Of course, I'm not one of those people who wants to excoriate Castro for everything he does or says. Nor will I defend his every word or action. But I will state the obvious: that Cuba's dictator has at least instituted better social programs than our dictator has. I think Cuba has done pretty well for itself, considering that the World's Only Superpower has been doing everything it can to strangle Cuba and its citizens lo these last 40 years.

But the Hitler picutre, yeah, that's pretty funny.

Is that the prank will probably cost someone their life. Cuba is a laugh riot.

6. Castro does lack a certain sense of style
He should learn to kill 'em by the tens of thousands, like our dictator does. But it's a small island, and after all, Bush had to start with wimpy little lethal injections in Texas, before he ascended the throne.

And Bush at least has enough style and grace to kill lots of women and children, unlike Castro, who regularly has photo ops with that Elian kid. Maybe Castro just isn't sociopathic enough to hit the big leagues, like Bush or Sharon or Putin or Pol Pot.

5. No doubt, the Simon Wiesenthal Center will be issuing a condemnation
within the hour...:eyes:

BTW, I agreed with your FIRST opinion...

"And * isn't enough of a scumbag to tie Hitler's shoelaces. To compare the two is to make all of our arguments appear ludicrous to even those who should be our friends in this fight. The Wiesenthal Center is a prime example. By citing Hitler again and again, we cheapen what evil truly means.

Maybe 10 or 20 years from now, the comparison will be accurate and God help us if that turns out to be true. But to claim it now is embarrassing and foolish."

Muddle, indeed.
