Canadian navy: volcano erupts off Yemen
Source: AP

TORONTO - A volcano has erupted on a tiny island off the coast of Yemen, spewing lava and ash hundreds of feet into the air, a Canadian naval vessel near the island in the Red Sea reported Sunday. There were no reports of deaths, but at least nine people were missing.

The Yemeni government asked NATO to assist in searching for survivors on Jabal al-Tair island, which lacks a settled population but includes military installations.

The Yemeni news agency SABA confirmed the eruption and said a military garrison on the island is being evacuated. It wasn't clear how many people were stationed on the island, which is used for naval control and observation because large cargo ships pass nearby.

Ken Allan, a Navy spokesman, said a NATO fleet just outside the territorial waters of the island reported seeing a "catastrophic volcanic eruption" at 7 p.m. local time. The two-mile-long island is about 70 miles off the coast of Yemen.

6. What happens when magma hits oil deposits?
I would imagine little to nothing w/o a strong oxygen source.... but then there have been peat bogs that have burned for decades.

It was on PBS awhile back and I'm not sure if it was NOVA or one of the other programs, but I think it was NOVA.

18. NASA has a pretty good picture of it in their "World Wind" program.
If you've never heard of it, it's like a scientific version of "Google Earth." One of the really cool things "World Wind" has is Real-time Weather.

The Island looks like a tiny volcano that's right in the middle of a deep trench in the middle of the Red Sea.

Here's the link, if you want to download it (It's an "open-source" program: <http://worldwind.arc.nasa.gov/>

17. God, what a lousy article! Would it kill this writer to actually say where this Island is?
Is it in the Red Sea? The Arabian Sea? Gulf of Aden? Or is it near Bab el Mandeb (the strait between Yemen and Djibouti)? :wtf:

20. It's in the Red Sea; at least 2 killed
A search for survivors is under way after a volcano erupted on a Yemeni island in the Red Sea, killing at least two people.

The western part of the tiny al-Tair island, used as a military base, collapsed following the eruption, the defence ministry said.

Two bodies were recovered from the sea and other soldiers are missing.
...
Rescuers were scouring the sea for about eight other soldiers who were feared to be missing.
