Israel FM pressed for world action against Iran
Source: AFP

UNITED NATIONS (AFP) — Calling Iran the "major source of instability" in the Middle East, Israeli Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni on Monday pressed for world action to bring the Islamic Republic's "sinister ambitions to a halt."

"No responsible state disagrees that Iran is the most prominent sponsor of terrorism," she told the General Assembly session here. "It is a major source of instability and conflict in Iraq, Lebanon, Palestine and across the entire Middle East and is the enemy of Arab-Israeli coexistence."

"There are still those who, in the name of consensus and engagement, continue to obstruct the urgent steps which are needed to bring Iran's sinister (nuclear) ambitions to a halt," she lamented.

The UN Security Council has passed two rounds of sanctions to force Iran to suspend uranium enrichment, which can be used to supply the fuel for power generation or nuclear arms...

13. Re: "No responsible state... "
No responsible state presses for unnecessary war and demands blood and destruction for its own sense of security.

6. Interesting.
"Livni also urged the UN to prevent militant groups from participating in democratic elections.

"Genuine democracy is about values before it is about voting," Livni said. "No true democracy on earth allows armed militia, or groups with racist or violent agendas, to participate in elections."

10. PLEASE tell me you don't think it's a good thing that the Israeli FM did this
You know that only reactionary things could come of a war with Iran. You know the only people killed would be innocent civilians. You know the US can't make Iran a democracy. And you know every Iranian government that ever exists will be anti-Israel.

11. A strike on Iran would be premature, IMO
I can understand Israel being a little trigger happy, given the threats directed at them and their proximity to Iran.

I'm not privy to the intellegence or really know how far Iran has advanced with any nuclear ambitions, just like everyone else here.

Ruling out a first strike is foolish. That's why none of the major Democratic candidates will do it. But I trust a Democratic President to be more measured in regard to this, and that's one of many reasons I'll be voting Democratic.

18. He coined the phrase
Edited on Wed Oct-03-07 02:46 PM by Zandor
It's not mine to say if those three countries make it up or not. It's his phrase.

I do think all three of them are threats, if that makes you feel any better.

23. But why would Israel EVER want a strike against Iran
When it would inevitably lead to every Arab and Muslim country launching strikes against Israel?

Wouldn't even YOU have to agree that they'd be suicidal to even think about backing such a move knowing that that would be the result?

26. You should read up a little
about the Middle East. The Sunni Muslim countries in the ME are not at all interested in helping Iran with anything, in fact the primary reason Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon et al were and are upset at what the US has done in Iraq is because Iraq provided a buffer or counterbalance to any possible Iranian aggression. By invading Iraq, the US has shifted the balance of power towards Iran, which was an incredibly stupid thing to do, not to mention immoral and unjustified.

25. The IAF bombed a target in Syria recently
And Syria couldn't do shit about it. According to military experts, Syria has the best air defenses in the ME other than Israel.

27. I hope you aren't saying that it's a good idea for Israel to play chicken with Arab air defenses.
A country that intentionally and unjustifiably provokes its neighbors can't say it wants peace.

22. Attack a Nation with Nukes?
First of all, there's no proof (see Iraq) that Iran has nukes. The Russians and the Chinese do. Neither of them is a true democracy. They have nukes that can reach other continents much less countries. Why is there no call to bomb them? The answer is that it would be suicide. Has the US EVER attacked any nation that actually HAD nukes? No. Case closed. What about the Saudis? Some of their religious leaders teach a fundamentalist form of Islam that advocates terror. Why don't the Israelis call for an attack on the Saudis?
