Ramadan violence haunts Baghdad Shiites

BAGHDAD (AFP) - Claims by Washington that the military surge in Iraq is working and violence is decreasing fall on deaf ears with Mona Jaber, who fled her home in Baghdad a year ago during another bloody Ramadan.

Talk that a "surge" of US military reinforcements aimed at restoring some kind of stability to the battered Iraqi capital is working is, for Mona, exactly that, just talk.

Her attempts to recover her belongings from the family's old home have failed as her Sunni neighbour refused to bring her the money at her new address after selling the household items.

Nearing 50, Mona is living on assistance offered by her new Shiite neighbours. They have given her a stove, a refrigerator and utensils for daily usuage.
