Rep. Jo Ann Davis (R-Va.) has passed away from breast cancer, her office announced Saturday. First elected in November 2000, Davis has been battling breast cancer for several years.

6. My condolences to her family
Maybe it'll be possible in the future to fix the funding fiasco the repubs created with regar to federal research money. I work in cancer research and, in the last 6 years, just about every scientist who was a repub has switched parties, because they are finally seeing what their formerly beloved party is doing to this country, even if only because it now personally affects them (less $$ for research, tighter competition for that $$).

Her predecessor died in office, as well. I guess there will be a special election soon, but I suspect next month will be way too early.

As I recall, the last time was "one of the few times" we were able to put up a Democratic Contender. However, I was not too involved as JoAnn Davis was *very popular* and he didn't have much of a chance of making a dent. Years earlier, I recall third party libertarians running but they barely registered on the radar.

on edit: \self-delete the rest - inappropriate speculation. :(

8. Sympathies to her family and friends
As others have said, cancer sucks! Ironic as well since Republicans have blocked stem cell research which may have some promise for cures for many illnesses in the future.

12. I didn't know that her breast cancer was that serious - terminal.
My sympathies to her family :grouphug: as I'm both selfish and also totally out of the loop, i.e., JoAnn Davis was our Congressional Representative. :(

21. Tragic news, but at least she had a chance.
How many women won't be diagnosed with breast cancer because they don't have insurance and can't afford a mammogram or treatment if they have it? Lawmakers need to insert the face of their loved one into the healthcare debate and decide whose wife and mother they will feel comfortable sacrificing.

22. Congresswoman Jo Ann Davis Passes Away After Battle With Breast Cancer
Source: Homepage of Jo Ann Davis

(Washington, D.C.) – Congresswoman Jo Ann Davis died at her Gloucester home this morning after a courageous battle with breast cancer. She was 57. Davis was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 2005 and had a re-occurrence earlier this year.

Davis had been receiving breast cancer treatment at Duke University and just recently had received positive reports on her condition. However, during the last week Davis’ health took a turn for the worse.

This is very, very sad. Regardless of her political affiliation, it is sad to lose someone at such a relatively young age from such a tragic illness. My deepest and sincerest thoughts, prayers, condolences and sympathies are extended to her family and friends

Too many members of Congress have died this year
