Cargill Recalls 844,812 Pounds of Beef, Citing E. Coli Bacteria

By Demian McLean

Oct. 7 (Bloomberg) -- Cargill Inc., the largest U.S. agricultural company, recalled 844,812 pounds of ground beef patties over E. coli fears, days after a similar move felled the nation's biggest maker of frozen hamburgers.

Closely held Cargill sold the frozen patties that might contain the bacteria nationwide, the company said yesterday. The meat was produced by Cargill Meat Solutions in Butler, Wisconsin, from Aug. 9 through Aug. 17 and sold mostly to restaurants.

Three cases of illness surfaced in Minnesota, alerting Wayzata, Minnesota-based Cargill and state health officials, the USDA said. E. coli causes severe diarrhea and dehydration and can be deadly in the elderly, infants and people with weak immune systems.

Last weekend, Topps Meat Co. recalled 21.7 million pounds of ground beef, the nation's second-largest beef recall ever, because of E. coli. At least 30 people were sickened in eight states. The private company closed its doors Oct. 5 after almost seven decades in business.

2. I can't afford steak, and now hamburger is out..
Sorry beef industry, you screwed up to save a buck and now you lost a customer (probably lots of customers).

Adding one more tick mark to my developing food phobia. Nothing is safe except my home grown tomatoes.

9. Pick a rump roast or chuck roast and
have your supermarket butcher grind it for you (you can freeze what you don't use). Hamburger is notoriously prone to various contaminations due to its large surface area as compared to a large piece of meat. In France restaurants are required by law to throw out ground meat if it has not been used within 2 hours.

19. can you believe
there are people that don't wash their meat before cooking it? just open the package up and slap it right into the pan (or oven)! some cultures even wash it in vinegar first.

17. Which results in dead loss.
I have come to the conclusion that corporations are like children. They require guidance and supervision. Left unsupervised, they steal the cookies, break the jam jar, become fat on non-nutritive substances and then die of the complications.

Unfortunately, like Peter Pan, they never grow up.

18. But see how the market is regulating itself?
Enough people become sick and die, the corporation reforms or closes. Isn't that a wonderful system?

When people speak glowingly of the "free market," remind them that it regulates by death.

21. Cargill - Evil Corporate Baron in Simpsons Movie
Edited on Mon Oct-08-07 12:39 PM by JPZenger
Remember in The Simpsons Movie? The evil corporate baron who becomes head of the EPA is Russ Cargill. I don't believe that name was chosen by accident.

"You know sir," Cargill tells the president, "when you made me head of the EPA, you were applauded for appointing one of the most successful men in America to the least successful agency in government. And why did I take the job? Because I'm a rich man who wanted to give something back. Not the money, but something."

Here's more on the Cargill Corporation, which is one of the few US-based multi-national firms that is still family owned. In the past, they have been accused by Greenpeace of being one of the leading destroyers of Amazon Rainforest.
