UAW reaches tentative agreement at Chrysler

UAW President Ron Gettelfinger and UAW Vice President General Holiefield announced today that the UAW has reached a tentative agreement with the Chrysler Corporation.

The strike against Chrysler at 11 this morning, following the expiration of an extension to the current labor agreement, will be recessed immediately. UAW Chrysler workers will be notified by the corporation to report to work on their next available shift.

“This agreement was made possible because UAW workers made it clear to Chrysler that we needed an agreement that rewards the contributions they have made to the success of this company,” Gettelfinger said.

“Once again, teamwork in the leadership and solidarity in the ranks has produced an agreement that protects jobs for our communities and also protects wages, pensions, and health care for our active and retired members,” said Holiefield, who directs the UAW’s Chrysler Department.

Details of the agreement are being withheld pending ratification votes by UAW Chrysler workers.

4. Great News for Chrysler, you mean
The strikes by the UAW against GM and Chrysler were called to soften up the membership to ratify give-backs in the contract.

5. I've heard that talk on the plant floor..
If Chrysler has a two-tiered wage system comparable to GM's, I'll be checking the "NO" box when I vote. That wage structure will destroy any kind of morale that we have in the plants. Not to mention the eagerness for supervision to fire someone making the higher wage to replace them w/ one that would make the lesser amount. It'll be like hunting season in there!

2. Union Reaches Tentative Deal With Chrysler
Source: nytimes.com

DETROIT, Oct. 10 — The United Automobile Workers union reached a tentative agreement this afternoon with Chrysler LLC, about six hours after the union struck the auto company.

The agreement was announced by the union’s president, Ron Gettelfinger, in a statement. The union told workers to report for their jobs on their next shift, which for most will be Thursday morning.

Details of the agreement were not immediately available, but it was expected to follow the pattern set down in a new contract at General Motors, which was reached on Sept. 26 after a two-day union strike.

“This agreement was made possible because U.A.W. workers made it clear to Chrysler that we needed an agreement that rewards the contributions they have made to the success of this company,” Mr. Gettelfinger’s statement said.

3. Looks like I get to go to work tonight!!
I would've appreciated a few nights off, myself. But this is great news for some of my fellow union brothers & sisters who need every hour of pay they can get. I was really worried about a few guys I work with. They told me they really weren't prepared for a strike.

6. Wow. I'm pleasingly 'shocked' that it is over after all the talk of this being a long one.
The terms of the agreement will be interesting, indeed.

Michigan certainly didn't need this strike but I hope the workers are not going to get screwed.
