Rice says Iran 'lying' about nukes
Source: AP

SHANNON, Ireland - Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice on Thursday accused Iran of "lying" about the aim of its nuclear program, saying there's no doubt Tehran wants the capability to produce nuclear weapons and has deceived the U.N.'s atomic watchdog about its intentions.

"There is an Iranian history of obfuscation and, indeed, lying to the IAEA," she said, referring to the International Atomic Energy Agency.

"There is a history of Iran not answering important questions about what is going on and there is Iran pursuing nuclear technologies that can lead to nuclear weapons-grade material," Rice told reporters aboard her plane as she headed to Moscow.

U.S. officials have long accused Iran of trying to develop nuclear weapons behind the facade of a civil atomic energy program, charges that Tehran denies. But Rice's strong words, including the blunt reference to Iranian "lying," come at a critical time in dealing with the matter.

9. This is SO rediculous...
The US Nuclear arsenal is roughly 150,000X Hiroshima. We have more nukes than ANY country on the planet. Moreover, we peacefully coexist with MANY nuclear powers. (France, Russia, UK, Germany, Israel, etc.) If Iran has ANY ICBM technology it is of the poorest kind, and the idea that they would use a nuke on the United States is PREPOSTEROUS. I don't think there is a nuclear or non-nuclear state on the planet that would consider using one on us, what would it accomplish? They'd get one shot and be erased from history, they're NOT that crazy. The REAL nuclear threat is terrorist groups, but the smart solution is WORLDWIDE NUCLEAR DISARMAMENT, which the US alone roundly rejects in the UN. This is one of the worst political moves this administration has made. Oh, and I almost forgot, Iran is according to some very good estimates, as much as FIVE YEARS away from creating ONE nuclear weapon. They want us to shit ourselves with fear over that??? Moreover, despite what the administration SAYS, US nuclear policy is inherently duplicitous, we say developing countries can't have nuclear power, but our authority to make those pronouncements lies in our missle silos, moreover all the global movers and shakers are nuclear nations. Also we ignore small countries until they try to develop nukes, then we discourage them. This is like giving cheese to a lab rat, it's positive reinforcement. Despite what our politicians say, the policy teaches developing countries, if they try to build nukes, we will listen, albiet briefly, and if they succeed in building nukes we will REALLY listen. We need to sign the FISSBAN treaty, and start using diplomacy, the future of humanity could depend on it.

14. What is your opinion of suicide bombers?
What do they accomplish when they get one shot off and then are erased from history? I don't believe that the people who flew the planes into the World Trade Center thought they were going to bring down the entire US, but wanted to hit us anyway they could. Isn't it possible that other countries might feel the same?

20. Yes, I know that, but states are run by people
that could lead them on a suicidal path. Just read some of the posts here, most believe Bush is already trying to start WWIII. What is the difference then? Is Bush a "cold rational monster" that thinks about survival? Most here would say no, and if you don't believe me, simply start a poll.

31. I would NEVER accuse this administration of LOGIC...
And I take you're point there ARE insane despots, but 1. Iran is not that kind of country, and 2. there is a world of difference between Bush poking the hornets' nest that is the middle east, and Iran attacking a country that has our level of military power, none other of which exists. First, Iran has made at least four diplomatic overtures to this administration, basically, we don't like eachother, but we have to have some kind of understanding because in a post nuclear/post internet/post globalization universe you don't have a whole lot of choice. Iran, thankfully, is NOT led by Amedinhejad, but by the council of Ayatollahs, who might be a little wacky, but aren't remotely out to lunch enough to attempt what's been suggested. Also, you wouldn't see it from the American coverage, but Iran is a very progressive country, at least as far as the middle east goes, considerably more so than saudi arabia, whom i would be much more worried about albiet for different reasons. There is a westernizing movement within Iran, they love western fashion, technology, and pop culture, theres' no chance of a nuclear attack from this country. Now for the second item, yes, Bush is placing our country and our future in grave danger, but this is because (frankly, he's not very smart) and this is an ASYMMETRICAL threat, it's dispersed, you have militias, terrorist groups, spread through seven or eight different countries. The united states is just about the largest country on earth, rivalling Russia and China, totally localized, but with military satellite bases on every continent and a military arsenal that is probably greater than both of the countries I just mentioned, combined. Despots generally have more sense of survival than to mess with something like that, they generally attack small, nearly defenseless countries, the US usually does. You can use the Hitler in Russia argument, but let's face it, he almost won, Russia was strong, but not US 2007 strong, if it had been, and again this is speculative to the point of pointlessness, I doubt he would've violated the non-agression treaty.

11.  Why We Know Iraq Is Lying - January 23, 2003 column by CONDOLEEZZA RICE
Eleven weeks after the United Nations Security Council unanimously passed a resolution demanding -- yet again -- that Iraq disclose and disarm all its nuclear, chemical and biological weapons programs, it is appropriate to ask, ''Has Saddam Hussein finally decided to voluntarily disarm?'' Unfortunately, the answer is a clear and resounding no.

There is no mystery to voluntary disarmament. Countries that decide to disarm lead inspectors to weapons and production sites, answer questions before they are asked, state publicly and often the intention to disarm and urge their citizens to cooperate. The world knows from examples set by South Africa, Ukraine and Kazakhstan what it looks like when a government decides that it will cooperatively give up its weapons of mass destruction. The critical common elements of these efforts include a high-level political commitment to disarm, national initiatives to dismantle weapons programs, and full cooperation and transparency.

22. This is like a sort of Liar's Paradox
If a liar like Condi accuses someone else of lying, does it mean the person she accuses of lying is really telling the truth? That might be too easy...

Still, people are like horses. You have to bet them based on past performance.
