Edwards Denies Tabloid Report of Affair
Source: AP

SUMMERTON, S.C. (AP) — Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards says a tabloid story that he had an extramarital affair is untrue.

"The story is false. It's completely untrue, ridiculous," Edwards told reporters Thursday after he was asked about the National Enquirer report.

The supermarket newspaper reported that the former North Carolina senator had an affair with a woman who worked on his campaign. It did not identify the woman, nor did it name the source of the information for its report.

Edwards said the story was simply "made up" and that he loves his wife, Elizabeth, who is being treated for an incurable form of cancer.

1. i think right wingers tried to push thing to distract from Larry Flynt's plan to expose
another wingnut.

it doesn't matter that the Edwards thing is false. they are just hoping the whore media reports it along with the truth about the Republican and the morons fall for it thinking it's a problem of both parties.

16. Kerry did deny a similar accusation in 2004
that was likely pushed by competing Democrats. He also in spring, discredited the SBVT.

15. affair
He had to say something. If this is a political trick, given the circumstances of this family, it is extremely cruel. We really need people in government who would stoop to this level to get elected. But then again look at the republican debates. These men are boring, self centered, and non to bright. You don't hear policy discussed. Just terror and fear. Anything to keep killing and stealing. John Edwards needs to hire an investigator, on his own dime, and find out who is behind this. That's really the only way he can defend himself 100%.

3. Edwards should sue their ass..
Lots of people have sued these types of publications and won because they don't care if they print the truth or not..they sell enough rags to pay for all the libel.

That's my theory or why would they keep doing it?

8. Supermarket newspaper?
That's quite a euphamism for the National Enquirer. Is that the AP's backhanded way of lending some credibility here?

Edwards handled this well, though I'm amazed "reporters" had the gall to ask.

9. Ann Coulter started the rumor and it was picked up by Fox
It was in the National Enquirer. And on tucker's show today coulter started in reporting on it to Tucker and he fed the conversation.

11. Coulter didn't start the rumor - she just referred to the Enquirer article on
Tucker's show, thereby insuring she wouldn't be liable, but still putting it out there and feeding the flames.

From what I can see, it began as a blog entry on HuffPo. And the writer didn't actually come out and say there was an affair, but it certainly seemed as though he implied it.

Daily Kos suggested that maybe the use of these videos, which were made to promote his One America project (not sure I'm using the correct name), couldn't be used in his Presidential campaign as they might be in violation of campaign finance law.

Here's a link to the Daily Kos posts:

And here's one of the videos (in which I found Edwards to be more impressive than I have in his current campaign)

I hate that this is happening to such a good man.

17. Link to the National Enquirer story

Methinks the right wingers are hoping this might distract from Al Gore's Nobel Peace Prize win.
