Gore, U.N. body win Nobel Peace Prize
By DOUG MELLGREN, Associated Press Writer

OSLO, Norway - Former Vice President Al Gore and the U.N.'s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change won the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize Friday for their efforts to spread awareness of man-made climate change and lay the foundations for counteracting it.

Gore's film "An Inconvenient Truth," a documentary on global warming, won an Academy Award this year and he had been widely expected to win the prize.

"His strong commitment, reflected in political activity, lectures, films and books, has strengthened the struggle against climate change," the citation said. "He is probably the single individual who has done most to create greater worldwide understanding of the measures that need to be adopted."

It cited Gore's awareness at an early stage "of the climatic challenges the world is facing.

The committee cited the Panel on Climate Change for two decades of scientific reports that have "created an ever-broader informed consensus about the connection between human activities and global warming."

Nobel Committee Press Release:

The Nobel Peace Prize for 2007
The Norwegian Nobel Committee has decided that the Nobel Peace Prize for 2007 is to be shared, in two equal parts, between the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and Albert Arnold (Al) Gore Jr. for their efforts to build up and disseminate greater knowledge about man-made climate change, and to lay the foundations for the measures that are needed to counteract such change.

Indications of changes in the earth's future climate must be treated with the utmost seriousness, and with the precautionary principle uppermost in our minds. Extensive climate changes may alter and threaten the living conditions of much of mankind. They may induce large-scale migration and lead to greater competition for the earth's resources. Such changes will place particularly heavy burdens on the world's most vulnerable countries. There may be increased danger of violent conflicts and wars, within and between states.

Through the scientific reports it has issued over the past two decades, the IPCC has created an ever-broader informed consensus about the connection between human activities and global warming. Thousands of scientists and officials from over one hundred countries have collaborated to achieve greater certainty as to the scale of the warming. Whereas in the 1980s global warming seemed to be merely an interesting hypothesis, the 1990s produced firmer evidence in its support. In the last few years, the connections have become even clearer and the consequences still more apparent.

Al Gore has for a long time been one of the world's leading environmentalist politicians. He became aware at an early stage of the climatic challenges the world is facing. His strong commitment, reflected in political activity, lectures, films and books, has strengthened the struggle against climate change. He is probably the single individual who has done most to create greater worldwide understanding of the measures that need to be adopted.

By awarding the Nobel Peace Prize for 2007 to the IPCC and Al Gore, the Norwegian Nobel Committee is seeking to contribute to a sharper focus on the processes and decisions that appear to be necessary to protect the world’s future climate, and thereby to reduce the threat to the security of mankind. Action is necessary now, before climate change moves beyond man’s control.

29. I don't know if my daughter will ever realize the significance of her meeting him on this eve
of his award....or that on the eve he signed her picture of him saving the world....

You know what else was pretty cool? She drew it on the back of a "Safe Routes to School International Walk and Roll to School" Day Poster. I am the team leader in our school district and I had extras and we always recycle, so she picked it up and drew on that....the symbolism isn't lost on me and even Mr. Gore noticed it....

Yes, its a night I won't forget....But the highlight in my life will be if I get to see Al Gore sworn in to office as President.....

.... when he was in town 2 weeks ago. They're going to remember this, for sure! (Oh -- and he insisted on coming down to the "overflow room" with the video feed, to talk to them in person. I'm always going to remember the way his face lit up when he walked in and saw all those kids sitting there. Never occurred to me before, that Al Gore might want my job.)

Yassar Arafat won one.

So, by accepting this prize, Gore will be linked to Arafat. And terrorism.

Wish I was just being snarky.

After the 2000 election, some psychic said that the winner of that election would be the loser and the loser would be the winner.

Regardless of whether one believes in psychics, we can certainly see that bush is the loser and Al Gore has become the winner.

413. Check out the opening sentence in this New York Times editorial, Kathy.
They share your sentiments EXACTLY.

"One can generate a lot of heartburn thinking about all of the things that would be better about this country and the world if the Supreme Court had done the right thing and ruled for Al Gore instead of George W. Bush in 2000."

http://www.truthout.org/docs_2006/101307D.shtml

Read it and WEEP, georgie-poo - you Fucking SCHMUCK!

Interestingly enough, I'm sitting here outside my son's band practice, and the drummer, who's the father of the lead singer (it's a different band - my boy's the rhythm guitarist and backup vocalist for this one) was saying - "God, bush has just RUINED America! The Canadian dollar is higher than it's been since the early '70's - higher than us. You NEVER see that."

The poorest excuse for a human being who walks the earth.

BTW - I filled up my tank this morning at the local self-serve and somebody'd stuck an "IMPEACH!" sticker on the control panel where you pay with your ATM card. And yesterday, at the bank, the young teller who helped me looked at my wristbands and said "I like the orange one!" The orange one says "IMPEACH bUSH & cHENEY" in black block letters. I got it at a recent IMPEACHMENT rally and I NEVER take it off.

There are FAR more of US than there are of bush-apologists. FAR more. More EVERY DAY.

Today I was traveling down the New York State thruway, this guy drove up real close behind me, then came around and cut me off. This guy gave me the finger for no othere reason than my "Bush belongs behind bars" bumper sticker.

Bush still has a lot of supports, and they're all jerks.

420. I was given the orange one by some woman on the picket-sign line
with me outside Henry Waxman's office in West Hollywood. It's down the street from the L.A. IMPEACHMENT Center. She said she had them made up. I made her take five bucks for it as a reimbursement. There's an ad for orange IMPEACHMENT bracelets here on DU - over on the left margin every so often. That may serve. Last Friday, I had to go to the bank and the young teller who helped me commented on it - "I like the orange one!" I also have a black one that says "I did not vote 4 bush."

I know what you mean, though. I've been flipped off and growled at on the freeway in exactly the way you describe. Some guy kept looking over at me with this rage in his face. I just smiled sweetly and maneuvered away. But I've also had my car keyed and my tires slashed by these "lovable" "all-American" "patriots." I guess that's the kind of personality people like bush attract. I'm VERY gratified not to have people like that as compadres.

Welcome to DU!

The behavior pattern of the bad guys is very predictable. They will try, and try VERY hard, to rain on our parade however they can. If they think it's our strength, they'll go for its throat to try to rip it apart and turn it into garbage. Sometimes they score points, and sometimes they draw blood. And sometimes they just wind up looking like the poor sports and petty, small, puny, arrested-development spoiled brats they are. Arafat shared the prize with two (count 'em - TWO) prominent Israeli statesmen - Shimon Peres and Yitzhak Rabin - for joint efforts, at the time, that attempted to establish Israeli-Palestinian accords that might stick. It was the attempt, at least in my opinion, that earned this international accolade. And to those snot-noses who'd try to discount and downgrade and discredit this in any way, I'd say "SO WHAT'S IT TO YA?" Mother Teresa's on the list, too. You gonna smear her? Go ahead. Let's see you attack that sweet saint. Why don't you put ann coulter on it? C'mon. Let's go. Let's see whatcha got. Lech Walesa is on the list. So is Nelson Mandela, Desmond Tutu, Elie Wiesel, Andrei Sakharov, Linus Pauling, Dag Hammarskjöld, Amnesty International, and the 14th Dalai Lama. You gonna slam any of them? C'mon, let's see. These are people and organizations who are globally renowned for being about peace and fighting poverty and standing against oppression - ideas YOUR precious bozo will NEVER even BEGIN to understand. Jimmy CARTER'S on the list. DEAL WITH IT. You sneer at him but you still have to face the FACT that he's a far better president, out of office, than any of yours has EVER been, especially your last one, whose "humanitarian campaigns" on the heels of the tsunami and Hurricane Katrina WOULDN'T HAVE GONE ANYWHERE IF HE HADN'T BEEN TEAMED WITH BILL CLINTON. ghwb wouldn't know pure humanitarianism if it threw him on the bathroom floor and gave him an enema. NOBODY would have come flocking to bush 1 for his own sake because he has virtually NO credibility with ANYONE anymore except deep within the bowels of the Saudi royal family and/or the Carlyle Group. All he's EVER gonna be known for is for being a lousy president who sired the All-Time Worst so-called president EVER - a "president" who could only win by cheating. That's YOUR legacy, poppy.

If they start, I plan to get snarky straight back in their faces. Well, okay, then. Let's stack 'em up side-by-side, shall we? OUR guy, WHO REALLY WON IN 2000, has earned the Nobel Frickin' PEACE PRIZE and the admiration of the ENTIRE WORLD. The highly-coveted medallion will go up on AL GORE'S family room mantle next to his OSCAR and his EMMY and his citations as best-selling author (and not merely for bulk-buys, either). YOUR guy is nothing more than an overgrown schoolyard bully who doesn't (and can't) EVER do anything else but go around lying, cheating, flouting the law, menacing everyone, wrecking everything he touches, and picking fights with people all over the world. OUR guy is about life and survival and peace and hope and truth and selflessness and nobility. YOUR guy is about death, destruction, greed, misery, lies, terror, and torture. I know whose side I'M gonna be on. I know whose side has the better man - HANDS DOWN. AND THE WHOLE FRICKIN' WORLD KNOWS IT, TOO!!! And I'll be VERY happy to tell any bush-apologists, assorted Pox Noise pissants or hate-radio hyenas to STFU and go sit on it and swivel.

And btw, some of them are liable to try to mention that Chickenhawk One has been "nominated" for the Peace Prize. Well, yeah, I believe that's true - maybe more than once. ANYBODY can be nominated. It doesn't mean all nominations are viewed with equal merit, or survive the awards committee's deliberations, or in his case, can even avoid being laughed out of the room.

But if you rembember the thing right. Not everyone in Norway, and in the world agree that mr Arafat was given the Nobel peace Price... As a norwigian myself I know that many, rigtly disagree deply with that price and dosent think that was a nobel thing to give to a longtime terrorist..

And it was maybee proven too, after many year that Mr Arafat was newer the "peace loving man" who just want justise for his people but rather a man who was in the war to the end.. And the catastrope who has happend after his death is over my head to understand...

But anyway congrats to mr Gore who are given "some" credit for his work.. He maybee not on everyone case be smack in the middle, but he was getting my thinking in the movie an inconvenient truth.. I have it on DVD.,....

Wel, The conservatives dosent like that "liberals" are pointing the fact in their faces I guess... We Do have a responsibility to clean up and take care of our world... Even when it "may" hit the "botton line" in economic sometimes.. If we dosent clean up and take care, we dosent have a world to live in anymore.... So to be honest, if I have to drive less, and recycle my waste, to work to clean up, so mutch better. It is not THAT dificult to recycle when it come ot it. And I have just good at walkning more than I do..

regarding rationing in order to support our troops fighting fascism overseas during World War 2, do they believe President Roosevelt should have told the American People to just go shopping instead? "The Greatest Generation" implored to shop until they dropped in order to stop Hitler and Tojo?

Hm, god questing, dont have the answer. But then Mr Roosevelt was not like this clown the american peopole are "used" to call President. President Roosevelt, with the good help of Primeminister Churchill understand what danger Adolph Hitler and Tojo was, and desided to fight them out.. But US was not given into war before the japanese fleet attaced Pearl Habour in 1941.. And then when Hitler gave US and GB war, Hitler was given the war, and was not to win it.

For that europe as we know it today verry thankfull and we want to be partners with US to fight against "terror".. But more like equal partners, not as "toolbox" when US need some help, if its diplomatic or militaric.. We do want to help, but not as servans, friends and allied Yes, mut at serfs and servans..

Mr Bush as President in US have probely doing allmoust ALL fault in the book, and are sending US back decaded when it come to suport from other nations.. The next president, wil have his work kut out for him.. Once try to get the soldiers back home, and some "security" in place in iraq. Then to "try" really try to fix some of the problems his former president have made in Europe.. It vil maybee be more easy to send the troops home from Iraq, then to try to fix many of the other gaffer the currend President have manage to made..

But then, the currend Administration dont se to want to repair some of the thing them have made.. 2 year again, and nothing to loose.. Thats dangrous when it come to a administration who is not exactly sane when it come to forreign politic as it is seen on the outside of US..

Gore, U.N. body win Nobel Peace Prize

53. I guess so...
Oh, and Edvard Munch too - who haven't felt like doing the Scream these past 7 years?

But seriously, I find it wonderful that the Nobel Peace Prize Committee has recognized the threat climate change is to peace in this world. If things continue as predicted (and those predictions are conservative) we'll have over 100 million climate change refugees in the next couple of decades. There will be wide-spread drought in many regions of the world - and many of these regions are already seeing increased conflict due to lack of water (the Middle East, anyone?) They saw the importance of human rights back in the 60s - since Albert Lutuli in 1960 to Shirin Ebadi in 2003. Now they're at the forefront of recognizing environmentalism as a cause for war and conflict.

18.  Gore, U.N. body win Nobel Peace Prize
Edited on Fri Oct-12-07 04:13 AM by cal04
Former Vice President Al Gore and the U.N.'s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change have won the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize for their efforts to spread awareness of man-made climate change, and to lay the foundations for the measures needed to counteract it.

Gore, who won an Academy Award this year for his film "An Inconvenient Truth," a documentary on global warming, had been widely expected to win the prize.

Climate change has moved high on the international agenda this year. The U.N. climate panel has been releasing reports, talks are set to resume on a replacement for the Kyoto Protocol, and there is concern about the melting Arctic.

The Norwegian Nobel Committee said global warming, "may induce large-scale migration and lead to greater competition for the earth's resources. Such changes will place particularly heavy burdens on the world's most vulnerable countries. There may be increased danger of violent conflicts and wars, within and between states."

232. Theodore Roosevelt won but he was an honest REPUB
Theodore Roosevelt
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Theodore Roosevelt, Jr. (IPA: <ˈɹoʊzəvɛlt>; October 27, 1858 – January 6, 1919), also known as T.R., and to the public (but never to friends and intimates) as Teddy, was the twenty-sixth President of the United States, and a leader of the Republican Party and of the Progressive Movement. He became the youngest President in United States history at the age of 42. He served in many roles including Governor of New York, historian, naturalist, explorer, author, and soldier. Roosevelt is most famous for his personality: his energy, his vast range of interests and achievements, his model of masculinity, and his "cowboy" persona. His last name, often mispronounced, is, per Roosevelt, "pronounced as if it was spelled "Rosavelt." That is in three syllables. The first syllable as if it was "Rose.""<2><3><4>

As Assistant Secretary of the U.S. Navy, he prepared for and advocated war with Spain in 1898. He organized and helped command the 1st U.S. Volunteer Cavalry Regiment, the Rough Riders, during the Spanish-American War. Returning to New York as a war hero, he was elected Republican governor in 1899. He was a professional historian, a lawyer, a naturalist and explorer of the Amazon Basin; his 35 books include works on outdoor life, natural history, the American frontier, political history, naval history, and his autobiography.<5>

In 1901, as Vice President, Roosevelt succeeded President William McKinley after McKinley's assassination. He is the youngest person ever to become President (John F. Kennedy is the youngest elected President). Roosevelt was a Progressive reformer who sought to move the dominant Republican Party into the Progressive camp. He distrusted wealthy businessmen and dissolved 40 monopolistic corporations as a "trust buster". He was clear, however, to show that he did not disagree with trusts and capitalism in principle but was only against their corrupt, illegal practices. His "Square Deal" promised a fair shake for both the average citizen (through regulation of railroad rates and pure food and drugs) and the businessmen. As an outdoorsman, he promoted the conservation movement, emphasizing efficient use of natural resources. After 1906 he attacked big business and suggested the courts were biased against labor unions. In 1910, he broke with his friend and anointed successor William Howard Taft, but lost the Republican nomination to Taft and ran in the 1912 election on his own one-time Bull Moose ticket. Roosevelt lost but pulled so many Progressives out of the Republican Party that Democrat Woodrow Wilson won in 1912, and the conservative faction took control of the Republican Party for the next two decades.

44. Freeped poll - in Norwegian
http://interaktiv.vg.no/avstemning/?id=4743
If you want to vote, be sure to vote for the question:

"Ja, helt klart riktig valg. Miljøspørsmålet er en av de største utfordringene vi står overfor."
Which is, translated:
"Yes, clearly a good choice. The environmental question is one of our biggest challenges."

The other options:

This leads now as I write:

"Nei, det synes jeg var et galt valg."
"No I think this was the wrong decision."

"Det er et riktig valg, men jeg er redd det ikke vil ha så mye å si for klimaet."
"Right choice, but I'm afraid it won't help against the climate change."

"Vet ikke."
"Don't know."

You can tell this award didn't go down well with the Norwegian press ;-)

162. Another poll
If anyone cares, AOL has put up a poll too. As of this point, Gore is losing, 52 to 44. I live in a universe where 100% of the people would be overwhelmed with joy - I've been waiting for this event literally all year, from "wouldn't it be nice" to "what if" to "I hope" to "please please please" to YEAH! I've always thought the Nobel Peace Prize is the pinnacle of honors in this world.

Other people live in a universe where they'd rather carp, snipe, and denigrate this magnificent honor. Let's change this poll.

Edited on Fri Oct-12-07 07:49 AM by frogcycle
he was listing all the bad nominees from history - such as stalin and hitler - to prove that getting nominated is no honor

he acknowledged that the nominating process allows almost anybody to be nominated, whether with merit or not, but then went on to show pics of stalin etc and say something about gore being 'in their company"

can't wait to see how he spins comparing only actual winners rather than cherry picking fringe nominees

he'll come up with a way to slam it

And I for my self wil love to se Mr Gore, even if its just a smal glimt of him. He is a great man, who desvered so mutch more than to be topled by a "elction" who even a 3 grade children must understand was rigged..

I wil maybee be THE case for a better climate, but He may manage to do that many country, as our own little country wil do the extra mile to get thing going to get the climate better.. We cant trust the big states to the right thing, then we have to do it yourself, even that it mean I cant drive the car that mutch as I want to do it. Or I have to recyle a mutch more than I do.. If it is for a better future, then it is for the best, when it come ot it...

Still, this is a monumental breakthrough for the "reality-based community" and all of us who are forced to live in a reality-based world.

141. Al Gore's statement on winning the Nobel Peace Prize
I am deeply honored to receive the Nobel Peace Prize. This award is even more meaningful because I have the honor of sharing it with the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change–the world’s pre-eminent scientific body devoted to improving our understanding of the climate crisis–a group whose members have worked tirelessly and selflessly for many years. We face a true planetary emergency. The climate crisis is not a political issue, it is a moral and spiritual challenge to all of humanity. It is also our greatest opportunity to lift global consciousness to a higher level.

My wife, Tipper, and I will donate 100 percent of the proceeds of the award to the Alliance for Climate Protection, a bipartisan non-profit organization that is devoted to changing public opinion in the U.S. and around the world about the urgency of solving the climate crisis.

181. President Al Gore is a National Hero!

Oslo, 12 October 2007

- We would have been satisfied even if he (Al Gore) had been the sole winner, says Carola Traverso Saibante of IPCC, in the first responses from the Climate panel to the Nobel award.

- This was a surprise, says Saibante to the AP news agency.
(..)
- This year's Peace prize will increase the attention for human created climate changes, says the leader of IPCC, Rajendra Pachauri.

About the IPCC:

The IPCC, established in 1988, is tasked with providing policymakers with neutral summaries of the latest expertise on climate change.

The organisation involves hundreds of scientists working to collate and evaluate the work of thousands more.

In the BBC 'Have your say', lol.

"In the short term, it is horrible to give the Nobel "Peace" prize to a filmmaker who makes factually incorrect propaganda. Can you say "Goebbels"? As a political move it is very interesting. He will be pushed into running for president to the detriment of Hilla the Hun."

182. Gore Shares Nobel Peace Prize with UN Panel
Source: CNN

This is the article on Gore's winning via CNN -- note the following:

A source involved in Gore's past political runs told CNN that he definitely has the ambition to use the peace prize as a springboard to run for president.

But he will not run, because he won't take on the political machine assembled by Sen. Hillary Clinton, said the source. If the senator from New York had faltered at all, Gore would take a serious look at entering the race, the source said. But Gore has calculated that Clinton is unstoppable, according to the source.

I don't know who the sources is -- sources have been wrong before -- and that sources was speaking before the prize was awarded. Just food for thought to the Draft Gore Movement.

Edited on Fri Oct-12-07 04:18 PM by OmelasExpat
Any political strategist with half a brain (I know, that narrows the field down a lot) knows that Gore would easily be able to make the growing Hillary/anti-Hillary schism in the Dem a thing of the past.

If he believes that the system is too corrupt to deal with, I can easily understand. But if he thinks he isn't at least a serious contender, he's about the only person on the planet who believes that.

202. Dumb Question Here - WHY?
What does global warming have to do with peace? To me this seems like an effort to highlight Gore, which is great because his efforts are commendable, but in the wrong way.

Wasn't there anyone who actually worked toward PEACE this year?

208. Climate change is going to be a leading cause of instability in the world in the years to come.
Climate change is going to disproportionately affect the poor and the third world (see: India, and all the people who live in coastal areas there). Look at the Grameen bank guy that got the award last year or a couple of years ago -- you could also say that's not directly related to 'peace' either, but it is.

307. The list has some interesting variations.
I don't always pay attention to who gets it and why. Mother Teresa, Desmond Tutu, Nelson Mandela, Henry Kissinger, MLK, the polish Pope, those who tried to iron out peace in the Middle East (Yasser Arafat), Jimmy Carter, all come to mind.

Thinking about it, perhaps it is more of a humanitarian award - Mother Teresa wasn't working toward "peace".

Perhaps whenever the conflict in the Middle East seems at its most furious, I tend to want focus on an end to war. And fail to see the bigger picture.

I'm glad I asked my dumb question.

Most often to obtain natural resources, such as water and arable land. If we cannot mitigate climate change, war will be an outcome. Gore has helped raise awareness of climate change around the globe. Whether it is too late is another question.

301. To be honest,
It's been a long time since I remember seeing a war over water or arable land.

Oil, yes. Water, no. Maybe I'm just not looking in the wrong areas of the world. Or maybe I'm not recognizing a fight over water & arable land when i see one.

Is the civil war in Iraq or the hostility in Korea over water or arable land? Is the power struggle between capitalism/democracy vs. communism, or Catholicism vs. Protestantism, Islam vs. Judaism, or just plain old ethnic cleansing, ultimately over water and arable land?

Or, perhaps natural resources are the clear goal of those who drive war, but this isn't communicated to the foot soldiers, who are tricked into believing that it's for a more passionate cause.

341. Read and learn.
1. Regarding water:

As demand for water hits the limits of finite supply, potential conflicts are brewing between nations that share transboundary freshwater reserves. More than 50 countries on five continents might soon be caught up in water disputes unless they move quickly to establish agreements on how to share reservoirs, rivers, and underground water acquifers.

http://globalpolicy.igc.org/security/natres/waterindex.htm

Water is the most precious resource in the Middle East, more important even than oil. Competition for water from the River Jordan was a major cause of the 1967 war. As populations increase, water becomes more scarce, aggravating regional tensions.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/hi/english/static/in_depth/world/2000/world_water_crisis/default.stm

'Whisky is for drinking, water is for fighting over," Mark Twain once said. At the start of the 21st century, his gloomy view on the water side of the equation has been getting endorsements from an impressive - if unlikely - cast of characters.

http://www.iht.com/articles/2006/08/23/opinion/edwatkins.php

http://www.mideastnews.com/WaterWars.htm

http://www.abc.net.au/science/news/stories/s1182739.htm

Have you ever been really, REALLY thirsty?

2. Regarding arable land, I can only presume you haven't studied much history if you aren't aware of wars for arable land. Just because you haven't seen something doesn't mean it hasn't happened. That is the level of thinking of an imbecile.

Of course, you have to take that with a grain of salt, as the Pentagon is full of a bunch of commie-pinko tree hugging hippy types.

Climate change as anticipated will result in food shortages, mass refugee problems, etc. I can't think of any single issue that is more important to PREVENTING the cause for war and strife in the future. Today the changes may be more inconvenient than anything but over time they will become substantive and compelling.

361. Wars for oil are taking place as we speak. Wars for water and arable land could
soon follow as climate shifts cause the loss of these precious resources. Imagine swarms of refugees forced from their homes and lands. What if there is absolutely no water left for Las Vegas and Los Angeles, where will those millions of people swarm to? Imagine the midwest and central valley of California too hot and arid to grow crops...

391. When you don't have water and your neighbor does what will you do about it?
When the mountain glaciers melt which feed the rivers, there will be wars over water if nothing else. Tens of millions if not hundreds of millions of refugees, being displaced from flooded or drought areas, only death and war can come from this.

very own, a very much loved person by so many has achieved what may be his GREATEST accomplishment.

I KNOW many here want him to run, think he WILL run, but WHY should he??? Why jump back into this hot bed of harassment and divisive thing called politics! He has done MORE out of office than he was ever able to do as a Senator & VP!!

Had THEY not CHEATED him and perpetrated an outright FRAUD in 2000 this country would have done so much better, but we got what we got, which only makes THIS HONOR bestowed upon him much sweeter and IMPORTANT!

YOU SHOWED THEM... Al Gore... all of my family SALUTES YOU and we continue to "go green" as much as financially possible!!!

261. And the Right Wing IDIOTS are apopopletic and in full court press now...
It's a thing of beauty...they're all choking on their bile...

CNN has to give "equal time" to the 3 RIGHT WING IDIOTS who have NO credentials at all to speak of and who have been THOROUGHLY discredited - in their concern for "fairness"...I'm disgusted with CNN...

This is GREAT NEWS for HUMANITY and AL at this crucial time...

Let's see we have something like 99.99% of ALL the worlds scientists agreeing with Al on the one side, and on the other side, we have a few DISCREDITED and DISGRUNTLED REPUKE opinion mongers who have an agenda - a LYING agenda - but they have to give "equal time" to be "fair"...hmmm...wonder where they were during the crap they threw at Clinton for all these years...hmmm...

Having said that the Kissinger award was probably the weakest ever, but in the context of 1973 they were trying to help end Vietnam. In 2007, they are trying to avoid war as the planet fries.

This is a great day for America....and America needed this! They can NEVER take this away from Al Gore, one of the greatest Americans in HISTORY!!
The rightwingnuts can say whatever they want...but Bush will go down as the worst leader in HISTORY (which is exactly what I told a coworker...he was shocked and he said "no way"...I said "Just wait and see...lol") What a rude awakening these chickenhawks are in for...HA!

Now...we need Al Gore as President! He would make sure America was the de facto leader in technological and environmental research and developement, manufacturing, and global policy. What better way for America to reclaim our pride and respect, and provide jobs for Americans as well as help save the earth for our children?

325. Some additional commentary
Secretary of State Rice is giving the President his daily briefing, and she mentions that Gore has won the Nobel Prize.

"Dad gummit," squawks the executive in his affected quasi-Texas accent.

Rice and the assembled staffers are silent. Such outbursts from the churlish President are hardly uncommon, but the pure pettiness of the sentiment is nonetheless surprising.

"I mean, really," he goes on. "I don't have a bell, and no one gave me no durned prize."

... we - as AMERICANS - should be proud as hell that one of our own is smart enough, involved enough, and CARES enough to delve so deeply into something that affects the entire world that it merits such prestigious acknowledgement.

What the hell is wrong with people, that they have to turn what should be a moment of enormous national pride, into a 6th grade pissing match?

352. The Right Wing Is Truly Showing How Revolting They Are.
I am in absolute tears of joy for Al and his deserving of this award. But Freepers and the Right Wing have turned this day into the most ugly I have ever seen. I cannot believe these people and how truly ugly they are.

Here is an American Politician being recognized by the world for his accomplishments with the highest award amongst men and here they are pissing all over it.

I swear to all that is holy I hate Republicans.

Well, if the pukes piss all over Al like they pissed all over the Dixie Chicks, then Al is going to be just fine.

the fact that their ignorant, hate-filled, ugly response was so predictable makes it that much more disgusting.

372. K&R #399 - What a wonderful thing this is!
I saw this on the home page when I logged in at work during lunch, and either because the internet at my workplace sucks or this place was swamped (or both) I couldn't view or recommend this thread.

Now that I'm home I'm thrilled to see almost 400 recs and all of these great comments from fellow DUers.

Now will he just do the right thing and run so he can save our country? I sure hope so! :D

382. Oh, how I wish Al Gore would consider running for President!
He is such a good man and so intelligent. I still say 9/11 would not have happened under his watch. He tried so hard for more airline security, when he was Vice President, only to be scoffed at by the Republican Congress.

I am so happy he won the Nobel Peace Prize, and was not surprised at all the he did win. (Something Bush cannot steal from him!!!)

CONGRATULATIONS VICE PRESIDENT GORE!

383. Now is the Time for Great Men.
America calls upon its true patriots men of great courage and strength to untangle this country from the great web of destruction that has engulfed us.

This country needs Al Gore NOW more then ever before.

With this honor the world has shown you a great and humbling respect. You are the answer to this nations problems. You must see this.

Simply put to restore the credibility and world standing to the office of President of the U.S. there is no one that can match you resume. Please... Please...

Hillary can run after your term.

Honestly you are the last great hope of this country. I remain hopeful..

397. To be honest
I am not sure if he deserved to win.
Yeah the movie he made is important because it made people more aware of the possible dangers of global warming and same for the UN report but this is the peace prize, it should have gone to Aun San Suu Kyl or someone similar.

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=389x2036982

By CHARLES J. HANLEY, AP Special Correspondent Fri Oct 12, 4:53 PM ET

What does global warming have to do with global peace? The globe may find out sooner than we think, experts say.

"Climate change is and will be a significant threat to our national security and in a larger sense to life on Earth as we know it to be," retired Gen. Gordon R. Sullivan, former U.S. Army chief of staff, told a congressional panel last month.

The Nobel Peace Prize Committee agrees. In awarding the prize Friday to climate campaigner Al Gore and the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, a U.N.-sponsored network of scientists, the Norwegian committee said the stresses of a changing global environment may heighten the "danger of violent conflicts and wars, within and between states."

then yeah looked at that way it maybe is related to peace because of the disrupting effects changes in the weather long term can have on otherwise stable governments.

404. Aunh San Suu Kyi has already won a Nobel Peace Prize.
Peace is absolutely connected to the climate crisis. The committee knows exactly what it is doing.

405. we MUST MUST MUST
make PEACE with the world I believe we have been given - so it does not destroy us! I've never heard anyone say that, but that's my take on why he won, then I read the committee's argument, that wars will erupt over water, etc, because of GW concerns is also a reason as to why he one.
