Chair of UN climate panel 'stunned' to share Nobel Prize with Gore
By Amelia Gentleman
Published: October 12, 2007

NEW DELHI: From his office in central Delhi, Rajendra Pachauri has spent over two decades first working on making the links between man's activities and climate change, and then on persuading the world's population of the damage it was wreaking.

The chair of the UN panel on climate, which won the Nobel Peace Prize jointly with Al Gore, said he was "stunned" when he received a phone call informing him of the news.

"I can't believe it, overwhelmed, stunned," he told reporters on learning that the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, or IPCC, had won.

This year his labors intensified as he oversaw the publication of a series of IPCC reports on global warming. Eschewing weekends, he worked in his office from 5 a.m. until late at night working with scientists from around the world to summarize scientific understanding of climate change.

2. As much as I am overwhelmed with joy that Al won - I am very pleased IPCC was recognized.
I think it is a plus for getting the public to wake up to this issue -- it wasn't just "Al Gore" who won so they can dismiss the Nobel as a liberal committee -- it was Al Gore and the thousands of scientists that contribute to the IPCC's work.

Congratulations Mr. Pachauri and IPCC!

14. yes! as a Canadian, I had been hoping for Sheila Watt-Cloutier, but this is even better
I know some of the IPCC scientists, and they are very dedicated and hardworking. The group deserves recognition, for everything it's done to monitor and verify environmental changes.

15. especially after being showered with contempt by Crichton and Co.
And accused by those who don't know any better (and don't even WANT to know), of being in it for selfish, profit-driven reasons. I do climate research myself, and it's very gratifying when people thank you for what you're doing.

10. Thanks for the great photo. It's the first some of us have seen of him, speaking personally.
He and his friends look very, very pleased, and they should. It's no small honor.

6. When I first read this I thought it meant he was stunned that he HAD to share it with Gore.

9. I know. That's definitely what the headline implies. When actually they mean it's WINNING
the prize that has him stunned. (I think. I tried clicking on the link and the site hung up my browser.) Sloppy or intentional? I don't know where the International Herald Tribune comes down on the great American sport of Gore-bashing.

12. They held back. Probably an oversight! Maybe this link will help, to the IHT:
~~~~ link ~~~~
OR, if it still doesn't work, go to the opening page of the IHT news:
http://www.iht.com/pages/europe/index.php
and look under:
Gore and UN Panel win peace prize
- Chair of UN climate panel 'stunned' to share Nobel Prize with Gore
That should work.
Glad I went back to look, too! Just found a section of photos of Al Gore:
13. Thanks, Judi Lynn. But it still hangs. IHT & Safari don't like each other for some reason.
Nice pics though! I feel like the world is tacitly trying to make it up to Gore for the shitty turn of fate he was subjected to. I'm reading Jeffrey Toobin's "The Nine" right now and steeling myself for when he gets to the rationales for Bush v. Gore. Every time Sandra Day O'Connor's name is mentioned I want to spit on it. It's a library book though.
