Russia Successfully Launches An Intercontinental Ballistic Missile
Source: Associated Press

(10/18/07 - MOSCOW, Russia) - Russia on Thursday carried out a successful test launch of an intercontinental ballistic missile.

The Topol RS-12M rocket hit its intended target on Kamchatka near the Pacific Ocean, the Russian Strategic Missile Forces said in a statement. The launch, from the Plesetsk launch facility in northern Russia, was part of the country's plan to upgrade its ballistic missiles and extend the life of its Topol missiles.

--
"Extending the service life of the Topol missile class will allow for the replacement of rockets being phased out with a new generation of rocket without putting a burden on the military budget," the statement said.

1. Oh, shit...
Putin saying to Bush: "So you have new nukes you're working on? I can do that to, you know."

2. Oh my, Putin certainly is sending strong messages to bush
and I must admit I am glad he is. The UN and, imo, the US Congress seems incapable of reining in the bush cabal but, it looks like Putin is drawing lines in the sand, so to speak.

5. My guess is this was a sales demonstration for Iran...
You too can be the proud owner of one of these missiles, only $9.99 million (+ SH). Call now, supplies are going quickly! The first 1000 callers will receive complimentary political cover from a UN Security Council Veto holding member.

6. Did they not have those already? What am I missing?
If they never had ICBMs, then why did we all build bomb shelters in the 60s and 70s?

And why do I feel like Putin is about to offer Iran a defense pact?

8. I agree, it makes perfect sense.

How can anyone blame Iran for wanting a nuke when the psychopaths in the White House are chomping at the bit to nuke them? If I were Iran, I'd call Putin and offer Russian oil companies exclusive drilling rights in exchange for a defense agreement. Bush and Cheney are psycho enough to start a war with Iran, but perhaps not Russia and Iran.

9. The first ICBM's, as crude as they were rolled out by the US and USSR around 1959.
This version that the Russians tested today has been in use since '81.

They should have had a life of around 10 years but have been upgraded and, as today's test confirms, usable and effective to this day.

Russia is being prudent with their military budget by keeping these missiles operational while developing new technology to replace them in the future.

10. My bad - I finally read the article
And I do find it interesting about Russia's care with their military budget. Here in the good ol' U.S. of A, we just bankrupt the Treasury to make the military contractors rich and look to slashing the public commons such as education, infrastructure and health care to make up some of the losses.
