Former Joint Chiefs Chair Crowe dies
Posted on Thu, Oct. 18, 2007

WASHINGTON -- William Crowe, an Annapolis-trained
submarine officer who rose to chairman of the Joint
Chiefs of Staff and served as ambassador to Great
Britain, has died at age 82.

The retired admiral died overnight at Bethesda Naval
Hospital, a Navy official confirmed Tuesday. The
official, who requested anonymity to speak before the
official announcement, did not know the cause of death.

With an academic bent, Crowe (pronounced as KROW)
sometimes wondered if his advanced degrees might
stymie his Navy career, but he moved from diesel
submarines after graduating from the U.S. Naval
Academy in 1946 to chief of the Pacific Command.

President Reagan named him the 11th chairman of the
Joint Chiefs of Staff in 1985. The year before, Crowe
had impressed Reagan, who stopped in Hawaii en route
to China for a briefing from Crowe on the military
situation in the Far East.

1. Thanks for posting this. We had the chance to see him at a Marine Corps
birthday ball in Honolulu(Waikiki Hilton) in the '80's. He was well liked and respected. USNA ' 78

4. I knew him. I liked him a lot.
I was disappointed in his post-naval decision to get involved in the shameless, profiteering manufacture of the troubled anthrax vaccine, but while he served on active duty, he was a fair guy, a straight shooter, smart as a tack, and "not an asshole."

The latter quality was probably the one that the greatest number of his subordinates appreciated.

Wow. Tempus friken fugit. Funny how some milestones for others are so .... personal!
