Iran hangs 12 for rape and murder

Iran has hanged 12 people, including one woman,
reports say, as the government steps up its
execution rate.

Nine people, including a woman, were executed
in a mass hanging at Tehran's Evin Prison for
murder. Three men were hanged for rape in the
city of Shiraz.

The death penalty is given for murder, rape,
adultery, armed robbery and drug smuggling
under Islamic law in Iran.

Correspondents say the rise in executions is
part of a crackdown on security to stamp out
serious crime.

Where "driving with your family in your car near a Blackwater employee in the mood to kill" is a crime punishable by death for your whole family with no trial, and then stack up the hundreds of thousands of dead Iraqis next to the executed Iranians, it looks downright progressive.

at the scene of their crime, no less, and the women they raped were NOT hanged with them, it stands to reason that they don't necessarily hang rape victims for adultery.

China 'outstrips world' on executions

China executed more people in the last three months than the rest of the world did in the past three years, the human rights group Amnesty International says.
"The campaign is nothing short of an execution frenzy" it says.
Using figures tallied from publicly available reports, Amnesty International said that since an anti-crime campaign, Strike Hard, was launched in April, China has carried out at least 1,781 executions and passed 2,960 death sentences.

But only a fraction of death sentences and executions in China are publicly reported and the actual number of people put to death is far higher, the group said.
Prisoners are also paraded through the streets past thousands of people on the way to execution by firing squad in nearby fields or courtyards, it said.
