China steel in border fence causes fuss
Source: Tucson Citizen

WASHINGTON - Members of Congress' steel caucus said they were alarmed to learn
that pipes made in China have been used in the construction of the U.S.-Mexico border fence.

Rep. Phil English, R-Pa., said Thursday at a Capitol Hill news conference that he found out
about it when he was given a photo apparently taken in San Luis, Ariz., that shows black piping
used as a fence post with "China" written on it in white letters.

English said one of his staff members confirmed the authenticity of the photo with
Department of Homeland Security officials.

"At a time when pipe and tube plants in my district are being shuttered, it is outrageous
that the tax dollars of those people are going to put Chinese pipe into an American fence
that I think a big part of the public supports," said English,
who represents northwestern Pennsylvania.

1. Lead pipes?
Just asking.

Does this mean it will fall apart, and we'll have to buy a new one?

We are buying fencing pipe from China (and paying exorbitant shipping costs) to put up a fence in the U.S. to keep Mexicans out? I suppose it is really made of lead and the Mexicans will sue us for exposure they got as they were climbing over it?

I suppose now Homeland Security will tell us they were saving our tax dollars by buying from China rather than buying high priced U.S. steel.

How many more months will we be suffering through this administration's incredible decisions?

9. The United States steel industry has been dying for many decades.
I remember in the early 1970s, Korean steel being used in
a U.S. copper mine.

....my oh my, what an administration....good red-blooded patriotic American red-white-and-blue steel pipe is not good enough for the Republicans to use on our countrys border fence, no, we need to buy Red Chinese Communist steel pipe to do the job better....

10. So...when in the hell are we going to take back America?
If our government won't at least start by leading the fight to use "Made in America", how can we ever expect the rest of this country to take pride and protect our loss of trade with China and the rest of the world?

15. Repeal WTO ...

The solution is to get out of the World Trade Organization, NAFTA, GATT and any other such nonsense organization. They are the tools of giant corporations to disempower democracy in favor of overseas slave labor.

18. the fence itself is wrong
anybody else see the irony of wanting to build a fence (keeping us IN) and here we are outraged that the materials are not homemade, China has this country in it's pocket. they own us. why shouldn't the fence be an extension of the great wall, that's what it means to me.

19. Maybe China's steel came from the WTC?
Edited on Sat Oct-20-07 05:14 PM by HypnoToad
http://edition.cnn.com/2002/WORLD/asiapcf/east/01/23/china.wtcsteel/

BEIJING, China -- China's biggest steel firm says it will receive its first shipment of scrap metal from the World Trade Center wreckage soon and turn it into steel plates -- not, as some newspaper reports had suggested, souvenirs.
