NASA won't disclose air safety survey
Source: Associated Press

MOFFETT FIELD, Calif. - Anxious to avoid upsetting air travelers, NASA is withholding results from an unprecedented national survey of pilots that found safety problems like near collisions and runway interference occur far more frequently than the government previously recognized.

NASA gathered the information under an $8.5 million safety project, through telephone interviews with roughly 24,000 commercial and general aviation pilots over nearly four years. Since ending the interviews at the beginning of 2005 and shutting down the project completely more than one year ago, the space agency has refused to divulge the results publicly.

Just last week, NASA ordered the contractor that conducted the survey to purge all related data from its computers.

The Associated Press learned about the NASA results from one person familiar with the survey who spoke on condition of anonymity because this person was not authorized to discuss them.

I feel so much safer now that I don't know how safe I am.

Thanks, NASA, I'm glad to know there's still one governmental agency that hasn't been touched by the corruption of the Bush administration.

When I figure out which agency that is, I'll let you know.

Unless those records were purged too.

1. I think this was their point
I think people in NASA WANT us to be scared, and start digging.
The sad truth is that the gop have been trying to KILL NASA since it's inception, for various reasons.
Science is BAD for the church - who gives ungodly amounts of money (pun unintended but funny)
Corporations want to conquer space, star wars, etc.
There are reasons to kill NASA - SETI - abundant. The right has always hated, and feared learning and science for the sake of learning. They are ignorant, stupid jocks, that can't pass a simple algebra quiz w/o cheating or beating nerds. They hate the fact that the more we learn, the less we need them. The less we need oil and such. All the best advances in the latter half of the 20th century came from space flights. Batteries, Velcro, double sided tape, micro chips, all of it was either directly or indirectly from the space program. Solar Panels being the most glaring example of space technology.

with solar panels we can completely do AWAY with fossil fuels as such. We still need oil to make proper plastics, but less than before. The reich understands this and thus we have oil wars. The green house problem is also a glaring example how we need to get away from fossil fuels. and Killing NASA is the only way they can accomplish many of their goals.

The problem is that the Genie is out of the bottle. You have the EU space agency, The old Soviet space agency that's managing to send up AND GET BACK SAFELY astronauts, as well as the budding Japanese, and Chinese agencies.

I think NASA is thumbing it's nose at the administration and this will cause MORE turmoil rather than less, since if it was simply released it would be page 99A and ignored, NOW... we have a conspiracy, and th American public LIKES conspiracies.

NASA began operating during Eisenhower's administration...after he signed the NASA Act.

Of course, Ike was a Republican rather than a rethuglican...:hi:

4. I'm an insider at NASA. The pressure is now incredible--from global warming to this it is endless.
There are a lot of good people at the agency, and most, more than any other agency do care tremendously about things like air traffic safety and the environment. But the previous poster is right: it as become increasingly a military wing of DOD, and had it not been for the perceived uses of space for the military this administration (and very possible the earlier ones) would have long ago desolved the agency.

7. I know of what you speak
This has been about BUSHIES' ORDERS, not internal NASA decisions. Indeed, the rethugs would starve NASA to death. (And note how many here are ignorant regarding how NASA research has improved their daily lives and their safety.)

Until very recently, NASA had orders to abandon aeronautics safety research, i.e. ageing aircraft, until it has been noted that US airlines cannot afford so many new aircraft.

5. Another bush crony now heads NASA.
Michael Griffin, bush's political appointee, is, among other things, known for thinking that http://www.space-travel.com/reports/NASA_Administrator_Michael_Griffin_Not_Sure_Global_Warming_A_Problem_999.html">global warming isn't any problem at all.

10. Why is this news?
As I understand it, this is the type of report that gets delivered to the FAA.
NASA is legally forbidden to release it to the public.
That's the FAAs responsibilty.
Why would NASA get the media bitchslapping?
