Some 60 demonstrators arrested outside U.S. Capitol

WASHINGTON, Oct 22 (Reuters) - About 60 peaceful demonstrators, including several dressed as polar bears, were arrested outside the U.S. Capitol on Monday protesting the Iraq war and global warming, authorities said.

"People are being arrested out here because you (Congress) are not doing your job," antiwar activist Ann Wright shouted into a bullhorn.

Demonstrators were arrested on charges of unlawful assembly and blocking entrances to the Capitol, which was ringed by members of the U.S. Capitol Police.

Sgt. Kimberly Schneider, a police spokeswoman, said, "We've had about 60 arrests." She said she had received no reports of violence.

16. We need campaign protest experts to advise us after these mass

arrests whether they are with or without weapons and maiming - so we can understand the law of the arrests.

Does anyone know the D.C. rules - do they have to get a permit? A license? Just what is needed to make it legal since they are claiming this was illegal - as they have before.

Would blocking an entrance render a permit or license void for everyone? Does it immediately make the entire group of protesters vulnerable?

We read about these arrests and it is usually with no background about legalities and I think it would help us all if we could learn.

It would seem that staying within the law would be better for everyone in the event that the police become violent without cause. Or block or stop the protest without cause. Wouldn't it be better to turn it around and make them the criminals or make them the ones who are out of line?

If you ask people to come out and protest, shouldn't legal groundwork be established?

These mass arrests are well planned in advance and far more organized than it appears. They always have attorneys with them and get on the spot legal advice.

30. An afterthought! In the news releases about the protests the press usually

reports everything as illegal. Does it mean that the lawyers didn't get to speak to the press? If the lawyer is busy, perhaps every protest should have a spokesperson working right along side the lawyer.

I think protests create a serious negative reaction with many lemmings and the near lemmings who love George and Dick or are reminded of their disdain for hippies.

If the lawyer or prublic relations type person went to the press and said that it was legal and why, it might get in. When it doesn't, it can go on record toward a build up of proof of neglect and imbalance.

Also, it seems that the brutality and excess is racheting up - perhaps there needs to be a web site where various protests can be logged - with detail about what I'm talking about - the legal aspect - as well as who claimed what and how many. I think the after the fact record is not as important as the protest, but can build up in importance for defending accusers. And as a learning tool. If they are building up, we need to build a defense.

Sitting in another state, it just seems like a confusing show and way too many people assume the protestors are doing something illegal.

issue and whether they plan to restore Civil rights.
First off, are they aware that they have been chiseled away to siut the current admin's desires.

I want to hear them speak for the people who place their lives in jeapordy by peacefully protesting Bush policy.

I want to know that they value civil rights as much as these people do.
It would be telling of each candidate, in this respect.

I also want to know that the 08 Dem President will never ever refer to our United States of America as "the homeland."
