Gordon Brown says he backs further sanctions against Iran
Source: Associated Press

<snip>

"British Prime Minister Gordon Brown said Tuesday that his government will seek further sanctions against Iran through the United Nations and the European Union to discourage Tehran's nuclear ambitions.

"We are absolutely clear that we are ready, and will push for, further sanctions against Iran," Brown said at a joint news conference with Israeli Premier Ehud Olmert.

"We will work through the United Nations to achieve this. We are prepared also to have tougher European sanctions. We want to make it clear that we do not support the nuclear ambitions of that country."

Olmert endorsed that message.

"Economic sanctions are effective. They have an important impact already, but they are not sufficient. So there should be more. Up to where? Up until Iran will stop its nuclear program."

3. Calling for sanctions...
...is not the same thing as talking about starting World War Three for cripe's sake.

2. Way to go, Gordon. Now if you can just learn to
sit up and rollover on command, you'll be ready for that "special relationship."

4. This could be to do with the peace conference in Annapolis
10/23/2007 7:43:49 AM Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert arrived in London on Tuesday for talks with his British counterpart on the ongoing Israeli-Palestinian peace efforts and to push for fresh UN sanctions against Iran.

Olmert's meeting with Gordon Brown, the first since Brown took office this year, takes place as international pressure mounts on Israel and the Palestinians to agree on a negotiated settlement of a final peace deal before the upcoming US-sponsored Mideast conference at Annapolis, Maryland later this year.

On Monday, Olmert met with French President Nicolas Sarkozy in Paris, who told the Israeli prime minister that France expects Israel to be accommodative and make "some gestures" in negotiations with the Palestinians.

Lately Olmert has visited Russia, France, now britain.
Palestinian officials are likewise winging their way around the planet.

The long road to Annapolis

The visit of Palestine President Mahmoud Abbas to Indonesia is obviously part of an ongoing campaign by both the Israeli and Palestinian leadership to drum up support as they prepare to revive peace negotiations that broke down eight years ago.

While Abbas is touring a number of Asian countries, Israel Prime Minister Ehud Olmert has dispatched emissaries to other countries on a similar mission. Once they have the necessary international endorsements, Israel and Palestine are ready to resume talks at an international conference planned for Annapolis in the United States next month.

5. Note, he said 'sanctions' not 'bomb them'.
So let's not anticipate Armageddon! I doubt very much that Brown would follow Bush into a war.
