Kerrey says he will not run for U.S. Senate
Source: Associated Press

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) - Bob Kerrey says he will not seek the Democratic nomination for U.S. Senate next year.

The former governor and U.S. senator from Nebraska and 1992 presidential candidate says he made the decision not to run for the seat being vacated by Republican Chuck Hagel after discussions with his family. Kerrey says he has unfinished business at New School University in New York, where he is president.

... So far, no Democrats have declared their candidacy for the seat.

It’s official: Bob Kerrey just announced that he will remain as president of the New School and will not run for a United States Senate seat from his home state of Nebraska. But he says that doesn’t mean he’ll be sitting on the sidelines of national political debates.

Mr. Kerrey, a former governor and senator from Nebraska, made headlines in August when he suggested that he might run for the seat being vacated by Senator Chuck Hagel, a Republican who is retiring. But by September, Democratic officials in Nebraska and Washington conceded that Mr. Kerrey was unlikely to run.

...snip...

The New School put out this statement this morning by Mr. Kerrey:

I have decided I will not leave The New School to become a candidate for the United States Senate in Nebraska. The reason is simple enough: For my family and me now is not the time for me to re-enter politics as a candidate

7. This is very disappointing, especially for a Nebraskan because

with Johannes we will have a guy who is a Bush clone and a who, as governor, decimated the human services system in Nebraska - increasing homelessness and putting some dangerous, deranged people on the streets who should not be roaming about unsupervised.

9. Was HE responsible for that? What a fuckwad.

edit--didn't he do something like shut down the mental-health hospitals, until there was only one left in Norfolk or some other far-away hick town? I remember hearing about this as a nurse in Omaha--where to put the mentally ill, because there were no longer inpatient facilities for them. Didn't know Johanns was that evil.

The Left's Iraq Muddle
Wall Street Journal
BY BOB KERREY

Yes, it is central to the fight against Islamic radicalism.
Tuesday, May 22, 2007

"Let me restate the case for this Iraq war from the U.S. point of view. The U.S. led an invasion to overthrow Saddam Hussein because Iraq was rightly seen as a threat following Sept. 11, 2001. For two decades we had suffered attacks by radical Islamic groups but were lulled into a false sense of complacency because all previous attacks were "over there." It was our nation and our people who had been identified by Osama bin Laden as the "head of the snake." But suddenly Middle Eastern radicals had demonstrated extraordinary capacity to reach our shores."

Please consider ending this badgering? I choose not to let you go tangental on me.

15. Honestly, I wasn't badgering you. You said that party loyalty ends for you
when it comes to the war. So I sought to challenge you on that, because conveniently Nebraska is actually the perfect "test kitchen" in which to test that conviction: we have an anti-war but otherwise conservative Repub, and a pro-war but otherwise fairly progressive Dem--whom do you vote for in that hypothetical matchup? It would be a tough one for me, in all honesty--I'd have to seriously consider Hagel in that matchup, but would probably end up with Kerrey because the war will end at some point--but conservatism won't.

16. IMO, basic Goldwater type conservatism is NOT our enemy ...
IMO, it's free trade and endless wars - whose concepts are promoted equally by Neo-liberals and Neo-conservatives alike.

I love the democratic party but, IMO, it's been compromised. We, the people need to dig deep and elect those who will truly put their constituents above corporate graft.
