Davis will not run for Senate
by Seth McLaughlin
October 25, 2007

Virginia Rep. Tom Davis today announced he will not run for retiring Sen. John Warner's seat, saying Virginia Republicans made a mistake when they opted to select their nominee through a convention, rather than a primary.

"This is just probably not the right time for me to make any advance and run for the Senate," the Fairfax County Republican said.

"I don't think our party understands what a difficult undertaking it is and how the demographics of the state and the issue matrix has changed markedly over the last decade."

The decision leaves former Republican Gov. James S. Gilmore III, who is expected to make an official announcement later this year, as the frontrunner.

1. I don't think that's right.
I believe Mark Warner will be the frontrunner when he announces next month. Gilmore was the governor who prevented a woman from carrying out her husbands wishes to end his vegetative state here in Virginia. The woman eventually won and then sued Gilmore, but she unfortunately lost the suit. He's a pig.

2. My guess is that the story meant to state that Gilmore was the front-runner for the Repubs.
But with the Washington Times who knows for sure.

3. yeah
Once Mark Warner entered the race, any other potential dem candidates dropped any intention of running. This is a red/purple state and he left the Governors mansion with an 80% approval rating(!)

As for the GOP, there were two major contenders - "moderate" congressman Tom Davis and "conservative" former governor Jim Gilmore. Davis wanted a primary but Gilmore wanted a convention to choose the GOP nominee. The state's republican voters are a good mix of moderates and conservatives, giving the edge to Davis in a primary. Unfortunately, the firebreathing conservative wing of the GOP leadership won the day and so the nominee will be chose by convention which favors Gilmore. Considering how his moronic ass bankrupted the state and Warner got us back into shape, he doesnt stand a snowballs chance.
