Republicans Dig In Against Revised Children’s Health Bill

By CQ Staff 28 minutes ago

By Alex Wayne, CQ Staff

President Bush on Thursday vowed to veto a minimally revised children’s health insurance bill, as House Republicans attempted to block a vote on the hastily scheduled measure.

Republicans members complained they did not have enough time to read the legislation, which Democrat leaders rushed through the Rules Committee late the night before. They also protested the rule for debate, which bars amendments. And they said it was unfair to force a floor vote Thursday, when many Southern California members have flown home to be with constituents who are struggling to cope with devastating wildfires. They asked Democrats to postpone a vote on the bill (HR 3963) until next week, but were rebuffed.

“I do not believe the absences of either party’s members will impact on the outcome of this vote,” said Majority Leader Steny H. Hoyer, D-Md. With the current authorization for the State Children’s Health Insurance Program due to lapse Nov. 16, he insisted it was vital to send the new bill to the Senate this week, so the notoriously slow-moving other chamber has time to act on it. The House is not in session Friday.

4. Gotta be from the Onion, right?
I mean, these lines:

"Republicans members complained they did not have enough time to read the legislation, which Democrat leaders rushed through the Rules Committee late the night before. They also protested the rule for debate, which bars amendments."

Gotta be sarcasm, right?

7. It's not exactly a new bill. It's the bill from last week with a few (well-publicized) revisions.
The Republicans know what's in it. This is all knee-jerk whining, which the Repubs do SO well.
