Nuclear Submarine Commander Removed
Source: AP

Oct 25, 10:12 PM (ET)

By CHELSEA J. CARTER

LOS ANGELES (AP) - The commanding officer of the nuclear-powered submarine USS Hampton was relieved of his duty Thursday because of a loss of confidence in his leadership, the Navy said.

Cmdr. Michael B. Portland was relieved of duty after a U.S. Navy investigation found the ship failed to do daily safety checks on its nuclear reactor for a month and falsified records to cover up the omission.

"His oversight of the crew's performance did not identify these issues" on his own, Navy Lt. Alli Myrick, a public affairs officer, told The Associated Press. Portland's commanders identified the problems during a routine review, she said.

More....way at the bottom.....

The reported problems with procedures and record keeping in the Navy squadron follows an incident in August when a B-52 bomber was mistakenly armed with six nuclear-tipped cruise missiles and flown to a Louisiana base.

The mission from Minot Air Force Base in North Dakota was to ferry cruise missiles that had been slated for decommissioning but the warheads were supposed to have been removed beforehand.

The Air Force disciplined some 70 airmen.

10. Someone didn't do their PMS
Forward types can be slackers every once in a while, but those damned aft types need to be on the ball all the time.

4. yup...
two nuke incidences in a few months? misplaced nukes going to a staging base? a nuke sub commander, probably with a spotless record (very hard to become a sub commander), suddenly has a problem?

there is something seething under the surface, the flags are popping up, but the dots are hard to connect.

someone is trying very hard to keep the lid shut on something very very ugly.

something wicked this way comes.

6. I need a few
more dots myself. People screw up. The Armed Forces are large organizations, there's bound to be errors. These errors sometimes hit the threshhold of when "something needs to be done". But I'll be interested in how all this shakes out.

8. Oh for f's sake--Paranoid much?
A crew failing to adequately execute safety checks then covering it up is now code for bombing Iran? Seriously, crank down the paranoia meter.

5. My friend's son was a tech on a nuclear sub.
I'm waiting for a call back.

His job was to do that safety check. I'm going to ask him if this is possible. Watch this space. I expect to talk to him later today.

9. "something wicked this way comes..."
can't express it better than that

there is definitely movement afoot

they're trying to get their chess pieces in place for checkmate - but, they're arrogant and sloppy

and, this 'age of information' makes it easier to squeal on their activities anonymously

it's never been SO HARD to pull off some bullshit as it is now - it'll be all over the internet in one day if you slip or, someone decides to squeal on you

we know about it even BEFORE you pull your hand out of the cookie - like the old saying 'caught with your elbow in the cookie jar"

we catch them every WEEK like this

our problem is our elected officials won't respond to anything revealed because they're part of it - either by choice or threat

i think that's why Gore doesn't run (not that he's my favorite) - i think they have something on him he could do without being all over the airwaves - maybe, something about a family member - maybe his son's DUI

they've silenced him - that's pretty obvious...
