Court frees Genarlow Wilson in consenting teenage sex case

ATLANTA, Georgia (AP) -- The Supreme Court of Georgia ordered Friday that Genarlow Wilson be released from prison, ruling that his sentence for a teen sex conviction was cruel and unusual punishment.

The decision was split 4-3.

Wilson had been sentenced to 10 years in prison after being convicted in 2005 of having oral sex with a consenting 15-year-old girl when he was 17.

He already has served two years in prison.

About damn time.. jailed _ten years_ for having oral sex with your girlfriend when you're 17? Are you kidding?

2. Thank God there are still a FEW sane people in the Ga. court!

I still an't believe the over agressiveness of the DA in this case! After the State legislature overturned their initial law and admitted they had made a mistake, it's unconcionable that this AH insisted on keeping this young man in prison!

Genarlow's atty. said she expects to have him released today, and I sure hope she succeedes!

BS like this case make me ashamed to tell anyone I live in Ga.

for this this travesty, should earn some time as well, imo...Damn, I hope this does not cause irreparable harm to this young man and his future.

On edit, I see the legal system had somewhat "tied hands" given the way the law had been written... But, especially after the local appeals decision went against the State, how the hell could they not at least have negotiated (GA AG) to have him released pending that appeal to the Supreme Court. This strikes me as punitive, beyond ignorant, and quite likely racist...

Thank heavens, he is freed.
