House Democrats Ask FCC's Martin To Hold Off Rule Changes
Source: Friday Morning Quarter Back

As the discussion intensifies over the proposed media ownership rule changes, 42 Democrats from the House of Representatives have signed off on a letter to FCC Chairman Kevin Martin, urging him to take his time with any changes. Last week, it was revealed that Martin was hoping to move up the timetable for the ownership rules to have a vote from the FCC on December 18.

In the House letter, led by Rep. Maurice Hinchey (D-NY), the House Democrats wrote that "We believe that are reminiscent of the bad behavior that resulted in an intervention by the Third Circuit of the United States Court of Appeals in your agency's efforts on media ownership three years ago. Therefore, we hope that you will immediately take steps to resolve significant shortcomings in your plan regarding accountability, transparency, and scientific integrity."

In related news, AFTRA announced yesterday that over 2,000 of its members had written to legislators asking them to stop the FCC from rushing to make any changes to the media ownership rules.

Frankly I'm not sure what to think. To me it looks like a strongly worded resolution.

1. Hold off until we can behead him.
I have no gentle feelings today.

2. Tell Congress you approve!

In 2003, spring, Michael Powell courted the MSM with promises of federal media rule changes at the same time that it was reporting all the WH's lies about WMD. McClatchy was reporting the truth, so the corporate media also knew the truth. However, they all went along with the lies. In June, 2003, after "Mission Accomplished" Powell rewarded them with the promised media rule changes. Coincidence? If you think so, I have some smoldering real estate in Southern California to sell you.

In 2004, after the 3rd circuit struck down Powell's rule change, he promised to appeal the ruling to the Supreme Court--after Bush won. Kerry said he would reverse Powell's rule change. We saw CBS-Viacom do what they did to Rather so Bush would win. We saw all the networks treat the Swiftboat Vets like real news and Kerry like a Waffler and Bush AWOL like a lie. We saw all the networks suppress their exit polls and treat Ohio 2004 like nothing happened. Then, after Bush was sworn in in 2005, Powell revealed that the promised SCOTUS appeal was all an administration lie to get the MSM to work for the Bush-Cheney campaign. The MSM turned on Bush-Cheney with a vengeance in 2005 with the DSMs, Katrina, Domestic Spying stories.

Now, Martin is trying it again, with special emphasis on News Corp and Republican Billionaire San Zell's newly acquired Tribune Co. both of which really need these changes because of recent acquisitions. The Republicans will be paid back with biased coverage during the 2008 elections.

This time the Democrats in Congress are being proactive.

Congratulate them.
