Iraq Police: 10 Anti-Al Qaeda Sheiks Kidnapped
Source: Associated Press

(AP) BAGHDAD Iraqi police say 10 sheiks allied against Al Qaeda have been kidnapped.

The group was made up of both Sunni and Shiite tribal leaders. Police say they were traveling home to Diyala province after a meeting with a government official in Baghdad to discuss coordinating efforts against Al Qaeda in Iraq.

U.S. military commanders have attributed a drop in violence in Diyala - a former Al Qaeda stronghold - to the increased public opposition to Al Qaeda, as well as an influx of U.S. troops as part of a security crackdown.

Come to think of it,
there were areas where even Saddam himself wouldn't go without knowing the roads were clear.

Eleven Sunni tribal chiefs abducted in Baghdad

by Jay DeshmukhSun Oct 28, 1:22 PM ET

Eleven Sunni tribal chiefs were abducted in Baghdad on Sunday after their meeting with a top government official, as Iraq was set to post its lowest monthly death toll in almost two years.

The tribal chiefs from the restive Diyala province, northeast of Baghdad, were seized in the capital's northern neighbourhood of Al-Shaab which has a strong Shiite militia presence.

They were kidnapped after they were returning from a meeting with a top official in Shiite Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki's office in Baghdad, a security official said.

The official said the tribal leaders were part of a local movement against the Al-Qaeda in Iraq group.

9. Okay, so this is the situation?

In the north, we're trying to prevent a real dust-up on the Turkey-Iraq border in connection with a Kurdish faction.

Meanwhile, shrub & darth are talking about WWIII and preparing to bomb Iran back to the stone age.

The Israelis are on top of something in Syria.

What part of Armageddon don't you understand?

Oh, wait, I'm a lapsed Methodist, not a fundie.

The fundies, actually, may be a only group truly happy with this situation outside the White House.

On edit: A mixed bag of Shia and Sunni leaders kidnapped together? Does that mean that there are Shia and Sunni trying to put an end to the violence, but are kidnapped by others not wanting to stop fighting?

10. "the tribal leaders were part of a local movement against the Al-Qaeda in Iraq group...."
hmmmm.
WHo would want to kidnap Sunni and Shia tribal chiefs? Diyala province is where "the surge" pushed from Baghdad the freedom fighters and their followers and now the tribal leaders of Diyala province have gone 'missing'.

hmmm
Somebody must need to raise money
