Bush Names Prestigious Medal Winners

President Bush on Monday announced the recipients of this year's Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation's highest civilian award.
...
Brian Lamb. The president and CEO of C-SPAN is being recognized for elevating the public debate and making the government more accessible.

Along with that well-deserved award to Brian Lamb, another one of my favorites, Harper Lee, is also receiving the award.

1. Putting bush and prestigious in the same sentence
Makes me think of those spam emails-the ones that offer a degree from a "prestigious" non-accredited school.

2. A pretty good selection, overall.
With the obvious exception of Henry Hyde. :puke:

3. I hope "Profiles in Courage" awards Al Gore. Gawd, wouldn't that
really implode the Right??? Let's write or whatever the process is to Caroline, Uncle Ted or whoever and get Al nominated. I'm sick of this Medal of Freedom crap going to the RWrs...Al Gore typifies the profile for courage in taking on the environment and plant warming...

6. Apart from Henry Hyde
I didn't recognize anything obvious. I don't know his party, but assume Benjamin Hooks is a Democrat based on his criticisms of Bush.

It's always a little political (Bush 41 gave one to Reagan, Clinton gave one to Sargent Shriver, etc), but this batch seems pretty well balanced.

23. Comparing Harry Hyde to Sargent Shiver who helped organize the Peace Corp is not a real tradeoff
between a political hack and someone who actually helped to contribute something positive to our world.

"Henry Hyde. The Illinois Republican served for 32 years in the House, where he was known for his battles against abortion rights and his leading role in the impeachment of President Clinton. He is being honored as a "powerful defender of life" and an advocate for strong national defense, the White House says."

4. Wonder if Steve Scully lobbied for his boss
Scully officiated at a recent D.C. press dinner attended by Shrub and looked awfully chummy with him ...

7. Brian Lamb is NO FRIEND of Liberals. Just look at the Left/Right programs on C-span.

8. Not sure what you mean
I haven't tuned in lately, but used to watch a lot of the hearings, Booknotes, author speeches etc and never saw anything but straight coverage of the events. Forget the labels, broadcasting the details of government is good for America.

11. My reply......
I agree with what C span SHOULD BE and what it does accomplish in MOST cases. What I'm saying is if you watch it (and I don't watch 24/7 or anything near that) look at Book TV for instance, most of the authors on it lean conservative. Most of the people interviewed lean conservative. You can argue this point with me but, if you watch a week of C span you will find it to be true. I've see Brian Lamb interview people and for the most part the interviews were informative and fair. But I have seen more than a couple of interviews that have been a little more "fairer" to the conservatives than the Liberals. Final point; anyone that Bush gives his medal of freedom or whatever the fuck he gave out, I would question.

13. The last point is fair enough
But as far as Booknotes interviews, I always thought he was extremely balanced, asking thoughtful questions to all parties.

15. Mustang;
I don't want to go on & on with this but I saw an interview (a perfect example) Sunday 10/29 with the "maker" of the documentary No end in sight, Charles Ferguson. When I saw this interview I thought it was a KGB interview with a "dissident". It wasn't fair at all. I have seen interviews with Mr Lamb or another C-span employee with a "conservative" person that seemed that the interviewee was the interviewer.

17. Brian Lamb has always been a wolf in sheep's clothing to me

90% of the time that I seem to turn him or CSPAN on for some reason there is always a Republican on or a Democrat that is not a "real" Democrat.

I guess my timing is off but that is what happens to me. So much so that I rarely listen to the "call ins."

I read somewhere on DU once that they( not CSPAN but party attached people) pay the Republican callers to call into CSPAN and rattle on about how much they love Bush.

I believe they said that the main office is somewhere in VA.

10. Don't agree
While I haven't watched it much for some time, I can't say I ever saw a bias in the events they cover. Booknotes was certainly a wide range of political personalities.

14. Do agree.

I find c-span/c-span2/BookTV to be eminently fair and informative, for television.

It's about the only place I've regularly seen Noam Chomsky, Gore Vidal, (in the old days) Christopher Hitchens, Molly Ivins, Studs Terkel, Helen Caldicott, etc. etc. etc.

I never can grok the c-span as RW-slanted complaints.

20. Brian had to change the call in lines because everyone became against boosh
from its beginning it was by time zone...when he got so many calls against boosh he changed the lines to Democrats/Republicans/Independents...then when the republicans began to complain against boosh he changed the lines to Democrats/FOR boosh/Independents....some poor republicans had no line to call on if they did not agree with boosh...

Sorry, Brian did everything he could to prop up boosh during the plummet in boosh approval!

16. I watch Washington Journal everyday ..
and I think it leans right when Brian is host on fridays. I even think Greta (the new host) leans right. She kinda gets ruffled when callers call in and really hammer the right.

21. thats what I thought about Greta
she ices up when a caller complains about Bush and his policies....she always manages to "lose" the call or says the tv needs to be shut down ......then she'll let GOP'ers talk on end and not interrupt..but when a Democrat tries this she always says."short on time"

18. "This year's Medal of Freedom"...?
What, is this the academy awards or something? We have to give them out every year? Why not monthly?

Heckuva job, Brian!
