BloombergOct. 30 (Bloomberg) -- Consider this hypothetical: Agents tap into a phone conversation between al-Qaeda operatives overseas and a conspirator in the U.S. plotting an attack and are bound by law to ignore the discovery.
The scenario isn't that farfetched, say critics of a proposed law to increase federal court supervision of eavesdropping on suspected terrorists. Democrats call it a drafting error and are rewriting the legislation.
The measure's defects go ``far beyond simple drafting errors,'' Texas Representative Lamar Smith, the top Republican on the House Judiciary Committee, said in a statement. ``This bill is fatally flawed'' and ``creates a new, burdensome process for intelligence officials before they can listen to Osama bin Laden's'' telephone calls.
