1. Damn that commercial
All I can think of is that somebody finally caught him messin' with their stuff.

Either that or it was a fall off the ceiling.

Eh, not such a bad image to be left with of the man. Made me smile.

Rest in peace, sir.

21. "If ever I would leave you"
If ever I would leave you
It wouldn't be in summer.
Seeing you in summer I never would go.
Your hair streaked with sun-light,
Your lips red as flame,
Your face witha lustre
that puts gold to shame!

But if I'd ever leave you,
It couldn't be in autumn.
How I'd leave in autumn I never will know.
I've seen how you sparkle
When fall nips the air.
I know you in autumn
And I must be there.

And could I leave you
running merrily through the snow?
Or on a wintry evening
when you catch the fire's glow?

If ever I would leave you,
How could it be in spring-time?
Knowing how in spring I'm bewitched by you so?
Oh, no! not in spring-time!
Summer, winter or fall!
No, never could I leave you at all!

22. we were so lucky with this . . . showed up an hour before the curtain
went up . . . without tickets.

Some ticket holders could not make it and switched nights . . . and we were able to purchase their seats . . . like 5th or 6th row center.

He was mid-60s at the time . . . and his voice was remarkably strong.

I remember this evening so well.

And I love that song - RG owned it.

37. I saw that show, too.
I was 12, and I had no idea how amazing that cast was until a few years later.

You could see Goulet's piercing blue eyes during "C'est Moi."

42. Born in the U.S.
Came to Edmonton, Alberta, Canada when he was 13 and later trained in Toronto. So, both countries had a hand in his development.

Early life
Goulet was born in Lawrence, Massachusetts, the only son of French Canadian parents, Jeanette (née Gauthier) and Joseph Georges Andre Goulet, a laborer.<1> Shortly after his father's death, his mother, sister Claire, and Robert moved to Girouxville, Alberta, Canada when he was thirteen years old, where he spent his formative years throughout Canada.<2>

After living in Girouxville for a couple years, they moved to the provincial capital of Edmonton so that he could take advantage of the performance opportunities offered in the city. There, he attended the famous voice schools founded by Herbert G. Turner and Jean Letourneau, and later became a radio announcer for radio station CKUA. Upon graduating from high school, Goulet received a scholarship to Toronto's Royal Conservatory of Music. There, he studied voice with famed oratorio baritones, George Lambert and Ernesto Vinci.

11. "...just like the responsible adults that we are...Isn't that right, Mr... Poopy Pants?"
"Naked Gun 2-1/2: The Smell of Fear," for anyone who wonders what the hell I'm talking about.

Bob's reaction to Leslie Nielsen's remark ("Oh, it's all right. I'm sure that we can handle this situation maturely, just like the responsible adults that we are. Isn't that right, Mr... Poopy Pants?") was my favorite all-time Goulet moment.

A close second was his performance of "Jingle Bells, Batman Smells" in Bart's treehouse "nightclub" on "The Simpsons."

Vaya con Dios, Robert...R.I.P.

12. He died waiting for a transplant
People would rather their body rot within a few hours than donate it while in good condition to save another's life.

I found comfort knowing that my father's good eyes were able to help two people see. And he gave his permission for this.

28. Nice story. Sorry Mom didn't make it.
My mom really liked Jim Nabors. Yes, "Gomer Pyle." He had a helluva voice, for anyone who remembers. Did a knockout "The Impossible Dream." My mom left us years ago, too, but I personally preferred Robert Goulet over Jim Nabors.

25. Moving and passionate version by Goulet on the original cast recording.
Edited on Tue Oct-30-07 08:54 PM by Kurovski
It's etched in my memory from early childhood.

The Simpsons not to long ago had an episode where the full version was sung, and I thought of Goulet the whole time. It seemed to be a tribute to the power of the song, and perhaps it was something of a tribute to Robert Goulet as well.

The man also had a wonderful sense of humor, and was extremely handsome, to say the least.

Rest in peace.

Edit: you can hear a later version of the song, performed in full on his official website. It will start up when you click on it. (I think it's being flooded with hits now, as It's slow to load when I just double-checked the link. But give it time, it does load after a few minutes.)

And you can hear snippets from the original cast recording of Camelot here, including the incomparable Julie Andrews.

26. I was madly in love with him
from the first minute I saw him on Ed Sullivan singing "If Ever I Would Leave You" as a promo for "Camelot."

I saw him twice in "Camelot," once as Sir Launcelot and once as King Arthur, about thirty years later.

I also saw him twice in person at concerts he gave.

I feel so sad.

RIP

I saw him on Broadway in La Cage aux Folles in 2005. His voice was as strong as ever and I could see how much fun he was having on stage. It was one of those shows you don't want to end and now he is gone. A sad day for us musical theater fans.
