Congresswoman Julia Carson dies
Source: Indianapolis Star

Congresswoman Julia Carson died this morning at the age of 69.

Carson’s death comes just weeks after she announced she was dying of lung cancer and would not seek re-election to a seventh term in 2008.

Two days later, she said she would not seek re-election, saying her time away from Congress would be “a time to weep and a time to laugh,” and she added, “a time to heal.”

But Carson never healed and never returned to Congress.

15. You may be thinking of Republican Congresswoman Jo Ann Davis,
(1st district, Virginia) who died from breast cancer on October 6, 2007.

4. we lost a great Progress Dem--see THIS:
A steadfast Democrat, Carson opposed President Bush’s request for authority to wage war in 2002. In 1999, she won enactment of a measure that awarded the Congressional Gold Medal to civil rights figure Rosa Parks.
In 1991 and 1974, she was named by The Star as Woman of the Year.

Carson’s death comes after she took a medical leave from Congress in September after complaining of leg pain and fatigue.

In her last public interview broadcast on Nov. 5 on the WTCL-AM program, “Afternoons with Amos,” Carson expressed frustration over her health problems. “I’m breathing and I feel fine,” she said. Her voice did sound shaky, though, and she had coughing spells during the interview.

“I’ve got bronchitis real bad now and I hope to get over it,” she said, “but you don’t ever know.

7. A great loss to our community. A truly great humanitarian.
She represented the Democratic wing of the Democratic Party. Her principled compassion will be sorely missed.

I expect thousands will attend her funeral, and they will be from both sides of the political spectrum.

18. I wish I'd been in her district...
...I live on the west side of Indianapolis; I was in her predecessor's until 1992, when we were gerrymandered to Dan Burton, and then in 2002 to Steve Buyer--niether of which are worth their wieght in pig crap.

Julia was an inspiration, and a good person, and it always put a smile on my face every time she defied the polls to beat some smarmy Republic who was convinced "This is the year that we'll beat her" Well, guess what, assholes, you never did.

Rest In Peace, Julia. Thank you for your long life of service to those who needed it most.
:)

Best wishes to her family and friends. Cancer is such a horrible disease. I hope we find a way to fight it better!

Just had to say goodbye to my kitty a couple of weeks ago too because of it. I can feel their pain!

I'm not sure how many are aware that there had been some grousing by the IN GOP about Julia's medical leaves. She never let them get to her. She just kept on going as best she could. Her death so soon after announcing her terminal illness proves just how sick she really was. Great lady, great loss to the people of Indiana.
