Race, Gender Compete In Democratic Race

Sat Jan 5, 9:02 AM ET

There have been black and female presidential candidates before, but none with the same potential as Barack Obama or Hillary Clinton. And for some the deciding factor in this presidential race will be one of two things -- race or gender.

VIDEO: Watch The Report

On the West Side Friday afternoon, JP's Hair Salon was buzzing, and it wasn't just because of work. It was because a black candidate running for president won the Iowa caucus thanks to a growing group of Democratic supporters, some of whom are playing the race card.

One client at JP's said that she's definitely voting for Obama.

"I think for me, race is trumping my gender," Pearl Leonard-Rock said...........

Maybe it is as simple as that---would explain why edwards is not on media list.
the media want another binary--either or kinda race.

2. This is strange. It's the second Yahoo article I've read with no source!
I posted an article from Yahoo about the election yesterday on DU that had no "byline" and no sourcing. It wasn't from the AP ...it wasn't from a Newspaper and it had some odd statistics in it that had no attribution.

I'm wondering if someone or group is pumping these stories to Yahoo to express a point of view that may have an agenda. It's something we need to watch. Those of us who post often like you do RodeoDance...and others might want to start checking to see if Yahoo is now into "unsourced" Talking Points as a regular thing... It's puzzling.

5. There's no link to click on that I can find....
Edited on Sat Jan-05-08 01:47 PM by KoKo01
 I don't see anything from Wisconsin new. Usually there's a source for a Yahoo article with byline. Where do you see the link so I can check it out.

I just checked Yahoo Politics and all these article have the proper Sourcing....AP and the state mentioned. It's weird that the article I posted and the one you posted don't have sourcing..

7. I hate this. I really, really do.
This sort of simplistic, unthinking, easy way of categorizing everything.

As if both candidates are nothing more than their skin color or gender. That's the sum total of who they are and why they want to be president... it sucks.

10. That and electoral shenanigans...
But your point holds.

I guess I'd just like to think better. And that if we weren't fed a continual stream of pap, we'd generally speaking show ourselves capable of a great deal more insightful thought.

13. True. Between the lamestream corprat media, the corrupt court and the cheating...
...Republicans - AND the races being "so close", it just makes it too darned easy to steal 'em.

I have zero faith in the integrity of our elections anymore.

A misinformed, far-too-ignorant, all-too-lazy, all-too-complacent, all too willing to swallow whatever the lamestream media says voting public (with totally screwed up priorities to boot), and then corporat/Republican cheating and corrupt courts atop that - I'd not be surprised WHAT we end up with as President - particularly after The W Debacle.

Sheesh. Sad.

9. Ahhhh. Here it comes. Those who think the opponent won only 'cause of race...
not because of his skills, gifts, and ideas.

Sour grapes.....again. If Obama had lost Iowa, I wonder if this poster would then be posting that he lost because he's black.

I am an Obama supporter for various reasons. He happens to be black, but that's not one of the reasons I support him.

I'm a middle aged white woman, middle class. Supposedly one of Hillary's base. The precincts in Iowa were filled with virtually nothing other than white people.

Sometimes someone wins because s/he captures the feeling of the country, because he has better ideas, better oratory skills, that "it" factor.

There are some who would say if Edwards had won, or indeed the 2nd place he got, is due to the fact that he's a middle aged white male.

12. CNBC's Chris Matthews threw the real dagger.... spin, spin, spin...
Edited on Sat Jan-05-08 07:08 PM by LetsThink
See, I thought the real nasty stuff didn't happen between any of the candidates. I thought it happened when commentators, like Chris Matthews of CNBC delivered spin after the coverage of each candidate's closing speech. Hillary actually gave a much more appropriate, gracious and fact-stuffed speech than any other candidate after the Iowa Caucuses. Pure performance, quality performance under pressure. And, by the way, she has continued the strong performance at Town Hall meetings in NH today (C-Span radio coverage) -- continuing to set the record straight on her plan to provide health care for all Americans, set the record straight on the vote to add Iran's Revolutionary Guards to the list of terrorist organizations, requiring Congressional authorization before any aggression against Iran -- and more misconceptions which have been widely spread lately by major news organizations.

Of course, in the end, the big Iowa story was that incredibly strong Democratic turnout !! YEAHHHH!! Good sign for more positive change to come--- If shrub hadn't been so inexperienced at the start of his Administration, perhaps we would be in a better situation today. 'Course there are some other factors in the shrub mix, too, I'll concede that much...... But, whatever happens..............we may have a DEMOCRAT IN THE WHITE HOUSE soon, soon, very soon.
