WASHINGTON
Trade using surface transportation between the U.S. and its North American Free Trade Agreement partners reached a record high in October, according to government data released Monday.
Trade between the U.S. and Canada and Mexico rose more than 11 percent to $74.25 billion in October compared with the same month in 2006, according to the Department of Transportation's Bureau of Transportation Statistics. The previous monthly high of $69.77 billion was set last March.
Through the first 10 months of 2007, trade rose 4.7 percent to $666.05 billion.
Surface transportation consists largely of freight moved via trucks, rails and pipelines. About 90 percent of U.S. trade by value with Canada and Mexico moves on land.
Imports rose 10.6 percent to $41.97 billion, and exports of $32.28 billion represented a 11.7 percent increase compared with October 2006.
