Glenn Beck: Put the 'Care' Back in Health Care
Edited on Tue Jan-08-08 11:59 AM by RamboLiberal
Source: ABC News

Conservative talk show host Glenn Beck returned to the airwaves Monday night with a stern message for the health-care industry, after a recent routine outpatient procedure turned into a medical nightmare and had a severe impact on his mental state.

Beck went in for hemorrhoid surgery and experienced breathing problems while he was at the outpatient facility. His doctors put him on a drug cocktail to ease his pain.

"I had the best doctors," Beck said on "Good Morning America" today. "I had problem with medications."

The doctors warned Beck he only had two options.

"You've got a choice: more pain or more drugs," Beck said his doctors told him. At the time Beck wasn't aware of all the medications he was ingesting.

I'm not buying the conversion yet. And Beck if you were in extreme pain after hemorrhoid surgery imagine the horrible pain many wounded soldiers have gone through because jerks like you supported the Iraq war and Bush! Imagine that soldier who lost limbs, or suffered horrible burns. Bet they'd trade their pain for yours!

And you have freakin' great health insurance and the means to pay for the best of care. Imagine what those who do not have that insurance go through Beck!

now two points

1.- Hemorrhoids are considered, after kidney stones, one of the most painful things people can get

2.- He had a strange reaction to the meds... very rare, very scary.

3.- Glenn welcome to my world... as to the elderly, (or young vets for that matter) welcome to the nightmare. The difference is... you are done, they will have to be careful with what they give you in the future... but you are done... some of us are not done. But welcome to a system that we all know IS DAMN OVEREXTENDED AND BROKEN

I've never passed a baby, so I can't speak to that, but the time I passed a stone was a very... grim day.

The scream that emanated from the bathroom stall in the Student Union building that one fateful morning in 1986 was immortalized by Edvard Munch over one hundred years before... so you KNOW it was some epic pain.

I had the babies, and the hemmhoroids as a bonus gift... so I at least know that that claim is 100% nonsense.

Haven't passed a kidney stone yet, but docs send you home... not give epidurals... so I'm thinkin it might not be quite so bad as childbirth, either. :)

Yea, right, whatever. I think there's much more to this story that he's telling.

Everybody in radio knows what happened to Rush, including Beck. I'd bet good money this is more about Oxycontin addiction than the "I didn't know what I was taking" excuse.

I don't know about you, but I research everything I put into my body BEFORE I put it into my body. Hell, I even research all the medications I give my dog.

32. My anasthesia and follow up pain meds were explained very well to me.
I had several abdominal surgeries last spring due to complications from an elective procedure. By the 3rd and last surgery I was hallucinating, altho it wasn't gruesome the way Beck says his were. I simply misinterpreted my hospital "step down unit" -- once it was my local supermarket, then it was a train I was riding on, then I thought all the furniture had been moved around. So you never can tell when your mind will produce a very different picture of reality due to all of the drugs accumulating in your system.

He'd have been too busy laughing to have a really bad morphine trip.

I always say hemorrhoid surgery is the worst because it's painful, it makes you terrified to eat (what goes in eventually goes out), and you can never show off your scar at a party.

Poor guy probably thought he was going to get VIP treatment and didn't realize that just meant the paint on his walls was a little fresher. VIP wings of big hospitals are just as short staffed in for profit healthcare as charity wings are.

Welcome to our world, Glen. May you continue to wake up.

19. I happened to catch Glenn Becks' radio show yesterday afternoon
Edited on Tue Jan-08-08 12:29 PM by EarlG
The guy seemed incredibly distraught by his experience, which honestly sounded horrible. But to hear him going on and on and on about the lack of "compassion" he received and the "compassion deficit" that America is suffering just made me want to puke.

http://mediamatters.org/items/200608250004">Beck on blind people: "Just to piss them off, I'm going to put in Braille on the coffee pot ... 'Pot is hot.'"

http://mediamatters.org/items/200509090003">Beck on the families of 9/11 victims: "You know it took me about a year to start hating the 9-11 victims' families? Took me about a year."

http://mediamatters.org/items/200509090003">Beck on people trapped in New Orleans during Hurricane Katrina: "I didn't think I could hate victims faster than the 9-11 victims ... scumbags."

http://mediamatters.org/items/200505180008">Beck on Michael Moore: "I'm thinking about killing Michael Moore, and I'm wondering if I could kill him myself, or if I would need to hire somebody to do it."

http://mediamatters.org/items/200405170002">Beck on Michael Berg (father of Nick Berg, who was beheaded in Iraq): "Can you let your son's body become the same temperature as your son's head before you turn this into a political campaign against the president? ... I think he is grieving, but I think he's a scumbag as well."

But gosh, now Beck has had a bad experience that affects HIM, he's all "where's the compassion?"

Oh, and PS... I'm sure Glen has decent health coverage. I wonder how he would have felt if he'd gone through all this and then got stuck with a bill for tens of thousands of dollars?

This post sums up my feelings about Beck.
He wants to talk about "compassion"? I'll just shrug and point to this post.

He has no compassion, but he expects it towards himself.
And then he whines like a petulant child when he doesn't get it.

He hasn't changed his view about healthcare. And he doesn't agree with Michael Moore.

25. read his comments here:

"When we got to the ER there was such a lack of compassion. I've never seen anything like it," Beck said. "

Tania carried her husband and held him up as they waited for help, Beck said. Two nurses briefly came out and spoke to the couple. Then an exacerbated triage nurse greeted the two, Beck added.

"He never even made eye contact with me," Beck said.

Finally another nurse, who noticed Tania carrying her spouse, rushed to the couple and asked them whether they needed help.

"I started to cry not because I needed help, but because somebody had compassion for my wife," Beck said.

He added his wife was there to help him get through the difficult time, but worries about those, like the elderly, who go in alone and have no outside support.

Somebody needs to be a strong advocate for the patients, he said.

"People connecting with people, let's emphasize the word care in health care."

From all the narcs he got (sounds like Morphine PCA and Fentanyl patch) they probably overdid it, and the guy probably hypovenitilated and got hypoxic. That would explain the hallucinations. Butt surgery does hurt, though. Hopefully he'll learn a little empathy out of this whole experience. He's still a dick though.

I'm not buying the severe impact on his mental state. That toadie has been MENTAL too long to be ab le to judge him sane in any way, shape or form.

I'm wondering if this is all one big STEAMING pile of horse manure - and this is his way of suddenly *getting with the program* regarding universal health care? This is just the sort of juvenile story someone of his intelligence would float as a *I've seen the light, And I'm with YOU* excuse to suddenly allow him in on the discussion?

let the rick and right-wing apologists suffer what the majority of human beings suffer...and they'll become the first advocates of progressive causes.

let the rich's sons and daughters die in Iraq, and they'll be the first calling for its end.

Let the rich's sons and daughters be the first to suffer lack of healthcare, and they'll be the first clamoring for a national system.

50. Well, the "hemorrhoids" were roughly the size of a cerebellum..
and "they" had collapsed pretty far into his rectum.

An economist needs to sit down and tell Glen how much health care would go up if every patient required someone to hold their hand from start to finish. The market just can't bear that kind of requirement. Maybe Glen should have dug into his own pocket and hired an ambulance service to wheel him in and out in a gurney. Then he and his wife wouldn't have been overwhelmed and he wouldn't be asking the rest of us to fork it over for his extreme care. This is obviously a problem that the market has already solved. Next thing you know, he'll be asking for limo service from his home to the hospital like those welfare queens that Reagan went after.

Our Nursing Director once said in an appeals meeting that a hemorrhoid sufferer shouldn't have had surgery but should have removed them the "old" way--with rubber bands that you slowly tightened each day until the hemorrhoids popped off.

Now THAT'S ENTERTAINMENT!

(She also advocated removing skin tags by tying thread around them to cut them off. A meaner woman I have NEVER met, and she was a registered nurse.)

61. I'm not sure if I understand the point.

Is he upset about the circumstances that led to his drug reaction, or the lack of empathy that he received from his providers?

Either way, I don't understand those who say that they have no sympathy. Regardless of whether we agree with someone's views on health care or otherwise, everyone deserves to be treated with respect in a health care situation. Who cares if the pain is more or less than childbirth or whatever else, it shouldn't have happened.

I can relate because I have acquired serious infections from a simple outpatient procedure for kidney stones not once but twice, that put me in the hospital for several days each and caused a great deal of pain. I now work in a nursing home and have a much better understanding of this issue of health-care acquired infections and complications. If I had known then what I know now, I would have filed a complaint with the DOH at least and maybe have called a lawyer.

crying about.. And I have tons of stories about how doctors, nurses and teachers have treated my daughter.
What a wimp!!!!

69. I hope all the nurses here have commented...I did
As a nurse of 30 years, with many awards and accolades for my compassionate care,I invite Mr.Beck to examine the realities of the medical world which is driven by profit.Believe me,it wasn't like this when I began nursing. It is the norm to go 12-13 hours without eating, drinking or sitting(or peeing).God Forbid a nurse should sit-she/he is labeled "lazy".God forbid a triage nurse doesn't gush in your presence-he probably just finished a resucitation of an accident victim.Triage is just that-the sickest come first.Welcome to the world of your creation-millions with no insurance use the ER as their Dr's office.People ARE sicker than you...and a lot more of them, due to lack of preventative care. You didn't follow your doctor's advice, and then you want to blame the nurses for not dropping everything to cater to you?Shame on you
