Bush Mideast speech draws cool response

By Hannah Allam, McClatchy Newspapers Sun Jan 13, 5:59 PM ET

ABU DHABI, United Arab Emirates — President Bush on Sunday described Iran as the world's leading state sponsor of terrorism and called on Arab allies to help his administration curb the threat "before it's too late."

.................

" Iran's actions threaten the security of nations everywhere," Bush said. "So the United States is strengthening our longstanding security commitments with our friends in the Gulf, and rallying friends around the world to confront this danger before it's too late."

But Bush appears unlikely, based on the regional reaction to his address, to find many Arabs to heed his alarms against Iran , a powerful neighbor and trading partner. Nor did many endorse his speech's other theme— a vision of "free and just society" featuring broad political participation and a voice for moderate Muslims in a region where money and family are common keys to leadership.

Even political analysts here who share Bush's democratic vision said that his speech painted over the daily reality for most inhabitants of the Middle East , an oil-rich region where power is largely inherited and human rights violations abound..............

good article. bush has no understanding of the ME--or if he does he is so intent on doing the democracy thing that he comes across foolish.

2. * doesn't have a clue when he opens his mouth.
These countries have no choice but to co-exist with Iran and they don't have a beef with it to where war is inevitable and compulsory. Plus, Bush just came from Israel and has made his close association with the country quite apparent and the countries to whom he's preaching and who don't share his affiliation with Israel aren't likely to trust his motives. Not to mention these countries harbor a silent resentment of * and this country for invading a sovereign Arab country and not allowing its inhabitants to independently decide how they will live, and a fear they could be in the crosshairs in the future.

7. Some should really ...
... confront BushCo "before it's too late".

Yes, he obviously passed his briefing by the Israelis before being dispatched to blow the war horn to their neighbors.

Ideological engagement is great. But these people are like Mormon missionaries when it comes to open-mindedness towards who's subject to conversion. It's all tell and no listen.

Warmongering on false pretenses isn't really any form of diplomacy, but it does seem to noticably fill the gap where diplomacy is absent.

This Bush must be their favorite ever. What an idiot.

5. I cannot figure out if it's insanity or stupidity that makes that guys crazy
enough to go to other countries and lecture them the way he does. I wonder all the time what the problem is. I know it's one or the other. I just can't decide which it is.

8. "Iran's actions threaten the security of nations everywhere"
Really? I mean, really? Come on! Does Denmark feel that its security is threatened by Iran? How about Paraguay? I'd send the shiniest nickel in my collection of shiny nickels to the first reporter who would pin Bush down on such a fatuous statement and pummel him with questions about what nations he's referring to, and just how their security is threatened by Iran.

10. I am not reading any of it - THERE IS NO NEED - why oh why would he all of a sudden have a clue.
The disappointment of being represented by a nincompoop idiot has sunk in already.
NO feedback - NO photos - NO quotes from a speech show anything other than embarrassment to us as a nation and cringing to his mother and father as they watch.
7 plus years is enough time to give the fuck up.
I can't wait to be rid of him.
And I (almost) don't care who replaces him.

14. Most Arabs
can see the big picture. * takes out Saddam and therefore eliminates Iran's biggest enemy. Iran then has unchecked power and begins to assert its influence in the region. * then uses this to attack Iran and dominate the entire region. Meanwhile all the repugs are happy because we are killing the arabs that attacked us on 911.
