Gay marriage ban may not make ballot

TALLAHASSEE --
A controversial amendment that would make permanent the state's ban on gay marriage may not make this year's ballot after election officials discovered a mistake made in Miami-Dade County.

Those seeking to put the amendment on the 2008 ballot must gather more than 611,000 signatures from across the state by Feb. 1. Those who backed the amendment that would ban gay marriage thought they had reached that threshold late last year.

But a new count of petition signatures ordered last week by the Department of State now shows that the Florida Marriage Protection Amendment is short by roughly 22,000 signatures.

Sterling Ivey, a spokesman for Secretary of State Kurt Browning, said the new count revealed that Miami-Dade's election offices had ''double-counted'' some 27,000 paper petitions that were turned in prior to January 2006.

2. How do you know he doesn't have a finger on the scales, here?
Just because he's a Republican doesn't mean he isn't human. Granted, it's strong evidence, but not definitive. :)

12. Well, it diverted the discussion about him...but you have to wonder if he isn't
quietly pleased at this turn of events.

13. I would imagine that he would rather have in voted on this year, rather than
2010 when he is on the ballot for reelection.

5. I hope that no national dems have to talk about this
socially progressive issues always seem to hurt us in the national election. Maybe 20-50 years from now the rest of the country will be on board.

9. it's a sad and true state of american politics because
our fearless democratic leaders are too scared to dare speak the truth, or try to explain WHY to the american voting public.

i think many people would volutarily agree to reason, IF it were properly addressed.

DON'T allow the debate to be sidetracked into blatant hatred and bigotry, and if it IS, then call them on it, in no uncertain terms, and pulling no punches.

but the democratic politicians are cowards, and too terrified of the rightwing noise machine.
