NAIROBI (AFP) - Police fired on protestors in a Nairobi slum Wednesday as Kenya's opposition launched a series of planned rallies across the country in a fresh challenge to President Mwai Kibaki's disputed re-election.

Three young supporters of opposition leader Raila Odinga's Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) were shot in the legs in Kibera slum, an AFP reporter said.

"They started shooting and three people have been wounded," said Frederick Ferdinand, an eyewitness.

In several other cities, police used tear gas and sticks to break up protesters attempting to march on stadiums and showgrounds.

KISUMU, Kenya (Reuters) - Kenyan police battled hundreds of opposition protesters on Wednesday, killing two, as the opposition defied a ban on rallies against President Mwai Kibaki's disputed re-election, witnesses said.

From the western opposition stronghold of Kisumu to the coastal city of Mombasa, in the capital Nairobi and the Rift Valley town of Eldoret, police clashed with gangs of youths, some of whom erected roadblocks and burnt tires.

Police in Kisumu shot in the air and used teargas and batons to disperse a 1,000-strong crowd. Two men were shot dead, witnesses said. A Reuters cameraman saw a corpse in the street, with bullet wounds in the back and side.

In Nairobi, police chased a series of protesters through the central business district, firing teargas and live rounds in the air. The gas seeped into nearby offices.

1. Police battle Kenyan protesters for second day By C. Bryson Hull and Nick Tattersall
NAIROBI (Reuters) - Kenyan police clashed with opposition members on Thursday in a second day of unrest over President Mwai Kibaki's disputed re-election, and the opposition said police had killed seven.

In opposition strongholds in the capital Nairobi and the western town of Kisumu, police fired tear gas and bullets on the second of three days of banned rallies called by opposition leader Raila Odinga's Orange Democratic Movement (ODM).

Odinga, who says the government stole the election, said police shot dead seven protesters in Nairobi.

"Police are shooting innocent civilians at will .. the government has turned this country into a killing field of innocents," he told reporters, providing no further details.

NAIROBI (Reuters) - At least 13 people were killed in Kenya on Friday when police opened fire in a Nairobi slum and ethnic groups clashed during protests against the disputed re-election of President Mwai Kibaki.

The worst bloodshed was in the huge Kibera slum, an opposition stronghold, where at least seven people were killed and a dozen wounded by police automatic gunfire. The French medical charity MSF called it a "massacre."

Police also opened fire and lobbed tear gas in the port of Mombasa, where one person was killed in protests after Friday Muslim prayers, and the southern town of Narok.

Friday's deaths were the worst toll from three days of protests called by opposition leader Raila Odinga's Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) against Kibaki's re-election.
