Schools locked down as police hunt cop-killers (2 Atlanta cops ambushed)
Source: CNN.com

ATLANTA, Georgia (CNN) -- Police are hunting for suspects in the killings of two off-duty police officers early Wednesday as they worked security at an apartment complex near Atlanta, Georgia.

<snip>

Six county schools are on lockdown as police search for the suspects, a school spokesman said.

The uniformed officers were responding to a call about a suspicious person when someone fired at them shortly before 1 a.m., Bolton said.

One officer died at the scene; the other died at an Atlanta hospital.

Looks like they were off-duty, working in an apartment complex that was described as "alot of issues, social issues there"

Ambushing and killing cops... man. Countries that start having this as a problem seem to wind up not being places where it's a good place to live.

1. If this happened before 1AM
Why OPEN the schools if they're so concerned?

3. Because a lot of those kids have nowhere else to go for either food or shelter.

I taught in an area like that. I'd say about 10% of my students were technically homeless, and 100% of them would have nobody to watch them during the week if they weren't in school.

5. A cop has been killed and cop's lives are more important than anything
so they have to show the whole community they really business by imprisoning the children.

If the kids were to stay home, they would not feel the awesome godlike power of police authority.

7. Sorry, but that is just not true. If even a policeman is not safe in
that neighborhood, imagine how it must be for residents there. THAT is the point. It must be frightening to be a family living there with few options to go anywhere else.

8. Police should not expect to be "safe". That is part of the problem.
They have one of the safest physical jobs bus drivers have a higher on the job mortality rate.

While I admit to feeling very sad for these officers and their families I think that the unaccountability afforded this extremely authoritarian group of people has resulted in excessive corruption, loss or respect and loss of effectiveness.

Of course the endless "wars" on the population declared by a succession of Republican regimes is the overwhelming source of this problem. "Wars" such as the war on drugs, war on terror, war on the poor war on habeas corpus and on and on. If police are part of a fascist assault on America we can expect more of this than if they were simply protecting us from criminals.

Peace to these officers and their families.

11. A temporary school lock down is "imprisonment"?
A temporary school lock down is "imprisonment"?

May I quote Inigo Montoya? "You keep using that word. I don think it means what you think it means"

4. The guy football star Ray Lewis killed was from Decatur. There
are some rough neighborhoods in that city. It said in the article that it was a low income apartment complex. It is sad news, but all too common that there are rough parts of town with too much violence.

10. People have been ambushing cops since time began
Hell, Clyde Barrow set out to kill as many cops as possible during his "career" to the point where he would park the gang's car in locations where it would appear to be abandoned. When cops came to investigate the car he opened fire.
