House Republicans Kill Children’s Health Bill
Source: AFL-CIO Blog

by Mike Hall, Jan 23, 2008

President Bush got his wish today to deny health care coverage to millions of uninsured children when the House failed to override (260-152) his veto of a bill to reauthorize the State Children’s Health Insurance Program (SCHIP). A two-thirds majority is needed to override a veto; today’s vote fell about 15 votes short.

The vetoed bill would have provided affordable quality health coverage for 10 million mostly low-income children—the 6 million already enrolled plus an additional 4 million who would have been eligible.

Says AFL-CIO President John Sweeney:

It is hard to believe in this weakening economy that anyone could justify denying working people the means to take care of their children’s most basic needs.

By voting against health insurance for children, the president and a few partisan members of Congress are making life even harder for the millions of families who are already struggling to pay the mortgage, the rent, the heat or any number of household bills as they pile up.

2. We need a Dem in the White House so badly.
I don't care which one it is any more. I wish George would leave early. Hasn't he done enough damage already?

15. We need so much more so badly.
Not vetoing the weak, watered-down legislation that reaches the White House isn't enough. We need real progressive bills to pass Congress.

5. That vote needs to be stuffed down the throat of every Republican
running in every primary. Ask these bastards if they supported what Congress just did! Get them on the record and then blast the hell out of them in the media and direct mail.

I was going to add something about rotting in hell, but I know that's bad karma, so I won't...

6.  Name one Democratic presidential candidate who would veto the things Bush has vetoed.

Yes, so this November how's about we put strengthen our majorities and put a Dem in the white house? Any Dem will do.

A lot of children will die as we hang around attacking each other and waiting for that one mythical "pure" candidate to come out of the depths of our imaginations to save the world. In the meantime, let's just put some Dem in the white house.

This is all a playground game, and people's lives are at stake.
What justification could these assholes POSSIBLY have for voting this down???

8. What the hell is going on?
260-152?

Sorry, my question is: this is our Democratic party?

260-152?

Something is rotten in the state of the union and the state of our congress.

Time to take a real hard look at this party of the people. Time to question it.

How sad. A man who lied 935 times to the people, is now still running congress.

I ask, How come?

Exactly one Democrat voted to sustain chimpy's veto.

24. GOP as popular as herpes and can't raise money
If Dems in Congress were real leaders they'd not only have some of the GOP members overturning Bush's veto, but converting to the Dem party as well.

Dem leadership either has zero leadership skills or doesn't want to override either. Take your pick.

10. I don't get your questions about the Democratic Party....
The vote fell about 15 votes short of over-riding the veto.
There was only one Democratic "Nay" and 13 "no votes". (Which is still too many.)
The vote was almost exclusively along party lines.

14. Make 'em kill it again next month
And the month after that, and the month after that, and every month until the election. The political ads will write themselves as long as the Republicans keep up their nerve. And if they finally cave, then the ads about how the Democrats triumphed will be the new text of the ads.

20. Why Should They Worry
or give a damn? They have the best health insurance that the American taxpayer could give them, plus a new wonderful raise that they voted for themselves to boot. Evil has no boundaries with these "people". Hopefully, their constituents will find out about this vote and bounce their asses out of office.

27. THIS is class warfare.
After all, a sick, frightened, and demoralized people are so much easier to govern (i.e. control).

See Sicko. It's plain as day. The oligarchy wants to keep the people sick and frightened (terra, terra) because it allows them to continue to exploit the masses for massive profit.

It is indeed sickening.

and if the resulting child happens to die a slow, agonizing death because of no healthcare, it's of no real concern to the Republicans. I hereby pledge to go to the polls and vote for whoever is the Democratic candidate.
