Zimbabwe arrests UK property tycoon
Source: Reuters

HARARE (Reuters) - Police in Zimbabwe have arrested British property tycoon Nicholas van Hoogstraten on charges of violating currency exchange rules, state media said on Saturday.

Police detained van Hoogstraten, 63, after a night raid on his home on Thursday and charged him with levying rentals on properties in foreign currency, the official Herald newspaper reported.

Zimbabwean law prohibits the payment of foreign currency for local goods and services.

Van Hoogstraten owns about 200 residential and business properties in Zimbabwe, a police spokesman told the Herald. He also has significant investments on the Zimbabwe stock exchange.

2. This could be very important!
Edited on Sat Jan-26-08 05:49 PM by policypunk
Nicholas van Hoogstraten (aka the largest land owner in Zimbabwe, and international criminal) is VERY close to Robert Mugabe, it could be a sign of slipping loyalty among the police. Although it could also be nothing when another of Mugabe's special white buddies John Bredenkamp ran into legal trouble over an immigration matter a few years ago it magically went away.
